Reopen Requested Move
editWhat’s the deal with the rejected requested move? Andyharbor (talk) 00:31, 9 March 2025 (UTC)
- I’m not about to read all of the back and forth on the previous discussion, but according to Wikipedia naming policies this article should clearly be titled “Côte d’Ivoire”. What’s the argument against? I’m genuinely curious. Andyharbor (talk) 00:33, 9 March 2025 (UTC)
- There were some procedural issues with the last request which resulted in nothing happening. I suggest making the next request in June/July (1 year after the previous) and the proponents having their arguments lined up. Erp (talk) 04:59, 9 March 2025 (UTC)
- Okay, thanks for the info. Andyharbor (talk) 23:53, 4 April 2025 (UTC)

I find this tendency worrying and a little more than ridiculous translation = disrespect. Where is the limit? Why don't you marry Italy in Italia? Germany in Deutschland? Russia in Rossiya or even better in Россия? Or does it only apply to countries that have the privilege of not being "Western"? Sira Aspera (talk) 10:10, 23 June 2025 (UTC)
- Because C’ôte d’Ivoire has internationally requested to be called that and those other nations have not. The requests of Eswatini, Türkiye, Myanmar, and Czechia were all respected just to name a few. Ethanbrs (talk) 04:15, 15 June 2026 (UTC)
- No they were not. Myanmar was refused until English usage changed to using Myanmar. And no one calls it Türkiye. Fyunck(click) (talk) 07:49, 15 June 2026 (UTC)

“The” Ivory Coast?
editPardon me and my western sensibilities, but I felt the need to bring this up. Should “The” be inserted in front of the name “Ivory Coast”, ala “The Bronx” or “The Philippines”? Maybe not in the article title itself, but when it’s used throughout the article. Upon googling it, it seems like it’s more common for English-speaking folk to use “The” when referring to the country, and since we seem to be sticking with the English name, I figured that might make sense. But please correct me if I’m wrong. The Shadow-Fighter (talk) 15:24, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
- @The Shadow-Fighter Yeah, "history of Ivory Coast" for example sounds grammatically wrong to my ear. Should be "of the Ivory Coast." I wonder if there's some kind of request for comment that could be made about this.
- But then again, the articles on the Domesday Book and the Magna Carta insist on not using definite articles with those names for some reason so maybe the dark anti-"the" cabal controls Wikipedia, lol. Kyoto Grand (talk) 19:49, 28 May 2026 (UTC)
- Usage in English is complex. I seem to encounter "the Ivory Coast" more in references to the historical region and "Ivory Coast" in references to the actual country. --User:Khajidha (talk) (contributions) 13:27, 15 June 2026 (UTC)
