First run through
- I understand the competition is relatively new so there won't be a ton of history, but still this feels rather short and I feel it could go into more detail about the tournament's history. For instance, what were its predecessors/counterparts? Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, have there been any other domestic competitions in Belarus? How did people react to the ban? None of these issues are covered, so please find sources for this if you can. In my opinion, the form should mirror that of World Figure Skating Championships#History, but shorter and more concise.
- This competition is not going to have anywhere near the coverage of the World Championships. This is more along the lines of the Budapest Trophy, which was promoted to GA a little while ago.
- I'm aware. What I meant was, are there any other aspects of the tournament's history that aren't covered yet? Mirroring Budapest Trophy#History would also be a good idea.
- How do you qualify for the event? What are the criteria?
- Has there been any notable news coverage of the event that isn't WP:ROUTINE?
- Why were there no men's competitors in 2014? Why were there no pairs competitors in 2012, 2014-16 and 2019? Was the lack of competitors in 2020-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic?
- The competition was held reliably from 2012 through 2021, so there was no interruption due to COVID-19. As for why there were no competitors in a particular discipline, I have no idea. Pairs has the fewest number of teams overall, so there is usually a smaller number of participants. Additionally, not every Challenger Series competition features the pairs event.
- What was the impact of Covid on the event then? Was it held behind closed doors? How was travel impacted (e.g. did athletes need to get permission to enter)? Did they have to stay inside a bubble like they did at the 2022 Winter Olympics?
- Okay, I found the event announcement for the 2020 Ice Star. As this was not a Challenger Series event, there are no limits on who can enter the competition, and member federations (ie. nations) can send as many athletes or teams as they want in each discipline. As for COVID, the document simply states that Belarus "will host the event according to the Guidelines for ISU Events During the COVID-19 Pandemic - Figure Skating", followed by a URL that leads to a 404 error and is not archived. However, I suspect the document is still accessible elsewhere and will continue to search.
- As far as when the competition is a Challenger Series event, there are requirements and limits on entrants, and it would be good if those were clarified. Even ISU Challenger Series does not provide that information, and it should. So, I will put something together for this article, and then eventually propagate it to the other Challenger Series event articles as well. Thank you for that good suggestion!
- I don't see the point of having a table for the junior pairs event if the only year it was held was in 2018. It may be best to convey this information in a paragraph instead.
Overview
So far looks pretty good. @Bgsu98: let me know when you've written the information on the Challenger Series as discussed earlier.
- Okay, I have added a paragraph explaining how the entrants for the Challenger Series events are selected. I will look into the COVID situation this weekend. Bgsu98 (Talk) 06:23, 14 November 2025 (UTC)
User:Gommeh: Okay, I found the ISU's COVID document. It offers nothing of interest, and it really doesn't bring anything to this specific article. The reason why it did belong on the Budapest Trophy article is because that was one of only two Challenger Series competitions held this season, and there was sourcing that was explicitly for Hungary. The competition even has its own article (2020 CS Budapest Trophy).
Unfortunately, Belarus does not have great press coverage in country because it's an autocracy. What would really be interesting to include would be how the 2020 Ice Star took place during the Minsk riots following the likely-rigged election of President Alexander Lukashenko. But there sure is not anything concrete that can be included in terms of sourcing.
