Number of discovered minor planets

edit

In the table of discovered minor planets of Henry E. Holt#List of discovered minor planets, there are 689 entries, whereas the source Henry_E._Holt#cite_note-MPC-Discoverers-1 gives a total of 688 discoveries (if I add 6 co-discoveries to the 682 "solo" discoveries).

It seems that the entry

(343827) 2011 HA24 11 September 1991

is questionable. If I consult https://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/tools/sbdb_lookup.html#/?sstr=343827&view=OPDCA, it reads

Discovery Circumstances

edit

343827 (2011 HA24)

Discovered 2006-02-25 by Mount Lemmon Survey at Mount Lemmon

and furthermore

first obs. used 1991-09-11

Does this mean, that this object has first been observed by Holt, but not recognized as a minor planet? Is it common practice to count it as a discovery under these circumstances?

I'm not an astronomy expert, so I wanted to ask these questions before removing the entry from the table. --Volvox (talk) 17:24, 12 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
