Endangered?

edit

This article is categorized as representing an endangered species, but there's no further information. Can anyone add details about the endangered status? CaptainCarrot 01:32, 13 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

This is not an endangered species. It is vulnerable in areas, though.

I can say that the picture of the hellbender which claims to be in its natural habitat is not - it is at the National Aquarium in Washington DC. 70.179.127.14 (talk) 16:13, 28 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hilarious.

edit

The caption underneath the picture indicates where the head is - it's so hideous/nondescript that it may be difficult to discern where the head of the organism is. I, of course, only looked this up after reading a Cracked.com piece on it.35.13.195.144 (talk) 15:19, 28 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Formatting error

edit

Under the Physical description headline there's a dotted box with a paragraph/sentence starting with "Both males and females grow to an adult length". There is some formatting error (lack of CR/LF perhaps?) that forces the paragraph to extend outside the dotted box.

I don't have the knowledge to fix this, it would probably only become worse if I tried, so you have to settle for me pointing it out. Cah1954 (talk) 10:13, 3 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Footnotes

edit

There are two places in this article where it appears that a footnote marker was typed in (like this: [6])instead of using the ref name tags. Unfortunately, footnote numbering is not static, but apt to change whenever another reference is added. Therefore, these two markers are most likely incorrect, or will be in the future. I will try to figure out what reference was used and plug in the right footnotes, but I don't have access to all the references listed. If I can't find the original or another source, I might have to request citation. (I really don't want to wade through the entire history of the article, but that might be a way to pin down the original source, if anyone else wants to.) Any editor who needs help, see footnotes. Fixed one, removed one. See section below. Richigi (talk) 01:39, 14 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Fossil age claim removed

edit

Removed the following claim:

(This estimated Middle Jurassic age for the fossils has been repudiated and defended multiple times, and the debate
is still not fully settled).[12]

I could not find a source for this (the [12] is not helpful). I did find a source that says that the origins of salamanders are a matter of contention, but this source implied that the China fossils would help to resolve the debate. (about halfway down the paper, paragraph starting with "The ancestry of salamanders...") Richigi (talk) 01:38, 14 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Erroneous Range Information/Common Names

edit

Crytobranchus allegaiensis is the Ozark Hellbender, not the Eastern Hellbender (Crytobranchus bishopi)! The range data always vary from source to source, so I will not argue the data presented. I would go through and re-edit all the names to reflect the correct designation but I just don't have time to right now. Does anyone agree? I'm surprised that this issue has not surfaced until now.
