Proposed merge with Iroquois Nationals

Hi Matt,

I like how your Wikipedia topic article is organized - History, Chronological timeline of events, etc. This being said, there is not much information. After reading the article I did not feel comfortable on my knowledge regarding the team. There should be a more expansive section at the beginning detailing exactly what the team is.

The sources seem to be appropriate. Similarly, the content is neutral and structured logically (but not very helpful due to the lack of information).

Thanks, Kevin  Preceding unsigned comment added by Kevinyesu (talkcontribs) 18:32, 25 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Change name to include Haudenosaunee Nationals?

edit

I'm contemplating a move request but wanted to workshop the proposal to see if it's a good idea in the first place and, if so, what the best article title would be. This team is commonly and officially known as the Haudenosaunee Nationals, though that name also applies to the Haudenosaunee national indoor lacrosse team, to the women's teams, and to the Haudenosaunee Nationals Lacrosse Organization that is over all these teams. Three possibilities for incorporating Haudenosaunee Nationals into the article title come to mind:

  1. Haudenosaunee Nationals – This team is arguably the primary topic per Pageviews and longterm significance.
  2. Haudenosaunee Nationals men's team
  3. Haudenosaunee Nationals men's lacrosse team

Considerations include whether there is a primary topic, how to disambiguate the indoor and women's teams, and whether or not it matters that we maintain consistency with article titles like United States men's national lacrosse team.

Thoughts? --MYCETEAE 🍄‍🟫—talk 16:47, 21 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Iroquois Nationals already redirects here. --MYCETEAE 🍄‍🟫—talk 17:35, 21 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hello. Thank you for the ping. I am not sure what you are asking. Could you please clarify your question? Cerebrality (talk) 19:29, 22 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
I think the article title should be changes to include Haudenosaunee Nationals capitalized as such, as in the three examples I provided. Curious if others agree. --MYCETEAE 🍄‍🟫—talk 22:40, 22 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Oh I understand now. Yes I think that capitalization would be good. Cerebrality (talk) 02:26, 23 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Do you have an opinion about which would be the best name for this article? Haudenosaunee Nationals, Haudenosaunee Nationals men's team, Haudenosaunee Men's lacrosse team, or something different? --MYCETEAE 🍄‍🟫—talk 04:34, 23 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
The question comes down to the nature of the word "Nationals". If "Nationals" a mascot name, it is best to keep the article name as it is now. If "Nationals" is not a mascot name, and is instead a part of the Haudenosaunee title, then the article name should be "Haudenosaunee Nationals men's national lacrosse team". Reading the team's website you linked in your original post, it appears that Haudenosaunee Nationals is actually part of their team name. In that case, the article name should be "Haudenosaunee Nationals men's national lacrosse team". Cerebrality (talk) 20:03, 23 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
This is not your usual "national team" which represents a sovereign country. I don't think its necessary to have the articles consistent with the other national teams - X men's national lacrosse team. Hariboneagle927 (talk) 04:18, 23 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
I agree, there are key differences. For one thing, the other national teams don't have "common names" except Team USA, Team Canada, etc. which are obviously ambiguous with dozens of other sports. --MYCETEAE 🍄‍🟫—talk 04:33, 23 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Maybe not, but the Haudenosaunee would disagree. For example, they refuse to use US or Canadian passports when traveling internationally, using their own Haudenosaunee issued passports as they don't consider themselves to be American or Canadian citizens. I don't believe it's necessary to be consistent, but I see no reason whatsoever that they shouldn't be, sovereign nation or not. Dwatts26726 (talk) 21:50, 30 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
I was probably the person who set the redirect of Iroquois Nationals, which was the original entry, to it's current. It was most likely done to match the title format of all the other national lacrosse teams. Dwatts26726 (talk) 21:44, 30 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
