This article is about the contemporary division of Maldives

edit

Please keep the historical names of the atolls. Some vandals try to erase or redirect but this is not the solution.

For example the way that is done in the divisions of Finland is a good model:

We could put: For other uses see Thiladhunmathi Atoll.

Reopening can of worms

As it has often been stated, each administrative division of the Maldvies has an official name, usually that of the main geographic/natural atoll within that administrative division. The names of the characters of the Thaana abugida assigned to each administrative division is merely a code, not a replacement of the official name of the administrative division. As such, the name of pages for the administrative regions of the Maldives in Wikipedia should bear these names, rather than the codes.

However, recognising that the Thaana character codes are now often used, I would like to propose a compromise of the naming convention for the pages incorporating both the official/traditional name and the Thaana character code to become the title names of pages of the administrative divisions of the Maldives.

Here are the proposed new names for administrative division articles, and the components for the template. The names and spelling conventions follow official Madivian government website (eg National Bureau of Statistics) for the atoll names and also the name of letters for the Thaana alphabet which are used as administrative division code names.

From north to south they are:

The result of this discussion was to change Northern Thiladhunmathi Atoll into a redirect targeting Haa Alif Atoll. Bensci54 (talk) 19:35, 18 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

These two pages describe the same topic. I would boldly redirect/merge myself, but the two pages disagree on a few points, such as the number of islands and how many are inhabited. Bensci54 (talk) 17:35, 13 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Support I support the merge, it is even confusing. Jõséhola 14:55, 15 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
Support I support it although I agree it's pretty confusing. I believe that Northern Thiladhunmathi Atoll is a geographical atoll and I know Haa Alif Atoll is the official administrative division set by the Maldivian government which explains why NTA has different islands listed than Haa Alif Atoll. Comment Reviewing this, it doesn't look like there is any content on Northern Thiladhunmathi Atoll worth saving, as it seems to be mostly duplicated. It seems that one of the islands disappeared due to erosion, which is the reason for the island count discrepancy. Other than that, all useful information is already on the other page. If anyone opposes to this just being redirected, please let me know, otherwise I will proceed in that direction. Bensci54 (talk) 16:53, 13 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Bensci54 I agree and it should be left as a redirect since there's nothing to keep. UnilandofmaTalk 10:05, 14 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
