Basketball greats

edit

I removed the start of usurping this for a list of basketball greats. Those types of pages generally don't work per Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of ice hockey players considered the greatest of all time.—Bagumba (talk) 16:24, 14 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

An unrelated deleted Wikipedia page doesn't set a precedent. We are talking about a cultural icon recognized by multiple media and news organizations. You have violated WP:3RR and Wikipedia:Ownership of content. I recommend you stop the gatekeeping and move on from being a watch dog over such a small page.Valkyrie Red (talk) 19:27, 5 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
The last time Bagumba edited this article was in June 2021, i wouldn't call that gatekeeping --FMSky (talk) 22:21, 5 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
sorry, got him confused with you. Same thing applies. You have violated two Wikipedia ordinances. You revert my edit one more time and you get reported. Consider this a final warning.Valkyrie Red (talk) 22:20, 6 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Bagumba: could you revert please --FMSky (talk) 22:50, 6 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
The purpose of this page is to disambiguate titles that might fall under the umbrella of "Greatest of All Time", so for example the albums with that acronym as the name, or the program with a near exact name. It is not a catch all for any individual who might be described as such, and disambiguation pages that can be described as descriptors do not list the individuals that would fall under the definition of the term unless it's part of their name in some way. - Aoidh (talk) 23:53, 6 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
There is nothing indicating that that is the purpose of this page. Nothing. Not a single rule. Until you bring that up for citation you are violating WP:OWN.Valkyrie Red (talk) 00:00, 7 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
First, you need to actually read WP:OWN. Reverting an edit is not evidence of that. Second, I think you should take the time to read Wikipedia:Disambiguation, which explains the purpose of such pages. In particular, WP:DABRELATED would apply here. - Aoidh (talk) 00:10, 7 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
Reverting edits on the basis of overseeing a page to one's subjective specifications = WP:OWN. Secondly, WP:DABRELATED gives leeway for entries not verbatim to the policy in place as long as they relate to it ("if the term being disambiguated is actually described in the target article") which numerous secondhand sources will affirm for Jordan.Valkyrie Red (talk) 02:35, 7 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
I'm done explaining to you the very simple reason why WP:OWN doesn't apply and you're not listening anyways, so we'll move past that unfounded accusation. You can't just say "WP:DABRELATED gives leeway for entries..." when no, it doesn't. Nothing you said is reflected in that guideline in any way. The term Greatest of All Time is not described in any way in the Jordan article. This is not List of basketball players considered the greatest of all time and is not a catchall for all (or any) individuals who happen to have been described as such, that is not the purpose of a disambiguation page. - Aoidh (talk) 02:42, 7 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Can we just lock this page?

edit

This page has suffered multiple abuses of vandalism, should we not just lock this thread? 86.17.57.59 (talk) 19:12, 18 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Inclusion of GOAT (sports culture)

edit

Hi FMSky: Your removal of the entry said Either every GOAT article gets listed here or no one. According to click data, GOAT (sports culture) received the most click of all the entries. Moreover, its full name is "Greatest of all time", bolded in the lead, and not everyone uses the term "GOAT" for this entry. It seems the other entries are either not commonly referred to as "greatest of all time" or is only a WP:PARTIAL match.—Bagumba (talk) 14:40, 16 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

It makes perfect sense to include the sports culture article here, readers looking for that article are likely to arrive at this disambiguation page, and so omitting a link to GOAT (sports culture) isn't ideal. As Bagumba says, it's bolded in that lead and nothing about that entry is an exception listed at MOS:DABNOENTRY that would warrant removal. - Aoidh (talk) 14:57, 16 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Why not list this one too then https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/G.O.A.T._(LL_Cool_J_album) FMSky (talk) 17:47, 16 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
That is just a WP:PARTIAL title. Those are handled by the "see also" link "All pages with titles containing Greatest of All Time". I have created the redirect G.O.A.T. featuring James T. Smith: The Greatest of All Time, so it should eventually show up there. —Bagumba (talk) 01:48, 17 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
