When I read "won almost 10 million votes" I immediately thought of the obvious "next question" - that is, "Out of how many total votes?" So I added that total (from the Wikipedia entry on the 1968 election). As I did, I thought of the other obvious "next questions" that arose as I read - what percentage of the total were his almost 10 million votes? So I added that from Wikipedia. And I also wondered what the actual number was (how "almost" to 10 million was it?) I figured it'd be paradoxically easier to read and process the actual 7-digit number than "almost 10 million," so I replaced the latter. Hope this is clearer for other readers as well.Brozhnik (talk) 01:23, 1 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Possible Running-Mates

edit

Listing; prompted since John Wayne was recently removed, though I know he had been openly rumored as a possible pick. Checkmarks are just to self-indicate that I am no longer focusing on sourcing for that person. I will note, however, that I have found little evidence of KFC's Harland Sanders being considered; in searching Newspapers.com I found only two mentions (1, 2), and neither are conclusive as far as I am concerned, at least given the amount of traction that other names have. I realize that Dan T. Carter's "The Politics of Rages makes this claim, but I have no idea what his source is; it isn't directly noted, and there is a rather.... extensive bibliography to pull from which is beyond my means to search. Has anyone been able to find other sources on this, or at least any involvement between Sanders and Wallace?

I recently exchanged emails with Professor Dan Carter about Harland Sanders, and he confirmed with me that Sanders had indeed been considered "at some length" by the Wallace campaign, at least based on interviews he conducted with Jones, Trammell and Turnipseed. However, it was determined that Sanders did not have the "weight" they found appropriate for a running-mate, at least when put alongside such figures as Happy Chandler and Curtis LeMay.
