Difference of using Streamer to using avplay
edit
avplay is part of Libav. Where is the difference of using avplay to using GStreamer through gst-launch/GNOME Videos/Snappy? In other words, I do not understand what "a pipeline-based multimedia framework" is supposed to be. User:ScotXWt@lk 14:52, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
- To answer my own question: see this scheme I created. GStreamer is an entire framework and it needs to load codec libraries (libav/ffmpeg) to play some file. avplay loads this libraries as well and can only play the file. A program like GNOME Videso or Snappy instead of loading libav/ffmpeg, which would "only" enable them to play files, relay instead on GStreamer and thus could to more, though their GUIs does not allow for as much as the CLI tool does. I think thats where the confusion came from. In case you definitely only want to watch some video, GStreamer IS overkill. On the other side, may people seem to prefer using the same application for video and audio, and in case of audio, it has become more widespread to load your music file from the network. Support for this is already in GStreamer. User:ScotXWt@lk 09:14, 21 January 2016 (UTC)
