Merge Gur cake and Flies graveyard into Fruit slice. Proponents cited sources identifying synonyms and overlapping definitions, and three out of five WP:MERGEREASONs. After this is done, Eccles cake and Garibaldi biscuit can also be considered for merging into Fruit slice (as suggested here and at the AFD; whether to do so was not decided in this discussion). -- Beland (talk) 07:55, 3 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

I propose that Gur cake and Flies graveyard be merged here. Both pages describe the same confection. The Gur cake page, which is sourced, notes five different names for the confection, including Flies Graveyard. The Flies graveyard page is entirely unsourced but describes the same confection, noting yet more names. There is no reason to have two pages on the same thing, and the disambiguation is also unnecessary when speaking about the same confection. Discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Flies' graveyard pertains. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 07:54, 28 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Whether via a draft/sandbox/strawman/whatever, could you expand a little on how you imagine the resulting "merged" title would look? And be cited/supported? I ask because, as noted, the Gur cake title is cited (unlike some of the other titles in scope). And not all (few?) of the cited references use the term "fruit slice"? (In short: Unless structured in a way that the sources can support [where "gur cake" and "fruit slice" are covered under the same title and the connection between the two terms is clearly cited], I'm not sure I can, yet, support a merge...) Thanks for your consideration. I can mock something up, although that'll take a little longer. I envisage primarily keeping the Gur cake page, as that is certainly the better one, and there is no point introducing unsourced material into it. The Fruit slice page would just redirect without substantial merge. However, some new writing would be required, and Gur cake itself should be an L2 heading. General information about fruit slice would go first, and the Gur cake heading would be more specific, explaining that it is more likely to be made with leftover cake, and we can add something about the association of the term with mitching.
Some sources for consideration: This dictionary (A Dictionary of Hiberno-English) defines Gur cake as a fruit slice, and discusses the name. This (Ireland's Traditional Foods) has a full entry about Fruit Slice which includes the "more refined names" and lists Gur cake as one such. This Oxford companion lists Gur cake as "a type of fruit slice associated particularly with Dublin". More interesting history about its association with children. I expect there's more. Other than some sources suggesting Gur cake is more likely to use stale cake as well as bread, the sources do tend to point towards fruit slice being the generic common name, and Gur cake being the specifically Dublin variety. All that can be on the merged page, expanded and contextualised. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 13:46, 31 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. While I don't seem to be able to verify those sources directly (I must overuse Google Books as each link gives a "reached your viewing limit" advisory rather than the relevant text), if each source connects the terms "Gur cake" and "fruit slice", then they could be used to cover those two topics under the same title. Some of the sources also seem to connect "Gur cake" with "flies' graveyard". Making it reasonable (and consistent with the sources) to cover all three topics under the one title. While I'm not (as) convinced that the sources indicate that "fruit slice" is the most common name (to the extent that it should be the "main" title/target), it is perhaps the most natural/neutral/descriptive/recognisable of the three terms. I've no objections to the merge as proposed. Guliolopez (talk) 03:21, 2 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Merge – per nominator. FaviFake (talk) 13:45, 4 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Don't merge – If you were to merge in Gur cake and Flies' graveyard, then it seems that you could make an equally strong case for also merging in Eccles cake and Garibaldi biscuit and probably dozens of other similar articles. Albanaco (talk) 18:42, 17 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Merge for short text, context, overlap and with a view to internationalization; it will save an unnecessary DAB too, and can maintain links to Eccles cake and Garibaldi biscuit amongst others. Klbrain (talk) 09:54, 15 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Don't merge – Fruit slice is actually a disambiguation page not a stand alone article and Gur cake is already listed there. No need to merge but keep as a stand alone article like others mentioned above. ww2censor (talk) 11:57, 21 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
