Talk:Eridanus (constellation)

deep sky objects?

edit

why does the DSO section reffer to one single 14 mag galaxy, ignoring all the brighter ones? it is really weird. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.128.198.193 (talk) 17:08, 8 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Super Void

edit

The supervoid could be a portal between our universe and the one that has been quantum entangled with ours. Discuss! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.189.122.66 (talk) 15:11, 21 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Proposed image addition: NOIRLab annotated chart of Eridanus

edit

Hello. I am affiliated with NSF NOIRLab and I would like to propose an additive image contribution for community review. This is an additive proposal: the existing naked-eye photograph of Eridanus (File:Constellation Eridanus.jpg) would remain in place, untouched. The proposed image would be added immediately above it in the "Features" section, so readers have both a naked-eye view and an annotated identification chart available together. Proposed change: Add an annotated wide-field photograph of Eridanus to the "Features" section, above the existing constellation image. Image: File:Eridanus (Annotated) (eridanus-ann).tiff (Commons page; source: NOIRLab image page) Suggested caption: The constellation Eridanus showing the IAU boundaries, the constellation stick figure, and labels for its brightest stars. Astrophotograph by Eckhard Slawik, from NOIRLab's 88 Constellations project. Placement / layout: Layout A — both images in the "Features" section. The annotated chart is added as a left-aligned thumb immediately above the existing File:Constellation Eridanus.jpg. The existing naked-eye photograph remains in its current position, unchanged. The "Features" section is long enough (multiple paragraphs covering stars, the supervoid, deep-sky objects, and meteor showers) to comfortably accommodate two images without visually overwhelming the prose, and the two images serve genuinely different reader needs — the existing photograph conveys the naked-eye visual impression, while the annotated chart provides an identification reference with IAU boundaries and labeled stars. Justification: The article currently illustrates Eridanus only as a naked-eye photograph, which conveys the visual impression but does not help a reader identify the constellation's boundaries, stick figure, or named stars referenced throughout the "Stars" subsection (Achernar, Cursa, Acamar, 40 Eridani, Epsilon Eridani, etc.). The annotated chart directly supports the surrounding text by letting readers locate the stars discussed in the prose. License: CC BY 4.0 (NOIRLab/NSF/AURA/E. Slawik), confirmed on the Commons file page. The exact wikitext to insert immediately above the existing File:Constellation Eridanus.jpg|... line in the "Features" section:

The constellation Eridanus showing the IAU boundaries, the constellation stick figure, and labels for its brightest stars. Astrophotograph by Eckhard Slawik, from NOIRLab's 88 Constellations project.

I welcome any feedback. If reviewers prefer a different approach, I am happy to (1) adjust the caption wording in any way the community finds more appropriate, (2) replace the external link in the caption with a <ref> citation if inline external links in captions are not preferred here, or (3) withdraw the proposal entirely if the community prefers the article as it currently stands. Thank you for reviewing. Marcodatadev (talk) 16:27, 24 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
