I have just modified one external link on Emma Gifford. Please take a moment to review my edit. If you have any questions, or need the bot to ignore the links, or the page altogether, please visit this simple FaQ for additional information. I made the following changes:
- Added archive https://web.archive.org/web/20130719164247/http://www.hardysociety.org:80/index.php/hardy/houses to http://www.hardysociety.org/index.php/hardy/houses

"Gifford"?
editMuch of the article refers to the married Emma as "Gifford". Wasn't her married name "Emma (Lavinia Gifford) Hardy"? I found it confusing and changed some plain "Gifford" referring to the married Emma to "Emma". I don't know why the article is named "Emma Gifford". Maybe she continued to use the name Gifford? I hope someone in the know can resolve this. Zaslav (talk) 18:30, 27 April 2025 (UTC)
- I agree, why is this article named "Emma Gifford"? I changed most of the "Emma"s to "Gifford"s on the basis of MOS:SURNAME, but they were reverted on the basis "But her surname was Hardy! We use Emma to distinguish her from Thomas." Did she continue to use the name Gifford after her marriage?
- The Oxford DNM entry uses "Emma Gifford" until her marriage, and "Emma Hardy" thereafter. The Spartacus refs use "Emma Gifford Hardy", but I suspect this is an American format and would not have been recognised by the Hardys. Some Recollections is credited to Emma Hardy.
- Can someone more expert than me on the Hardys please sort this out? Shouldn't the article be renamed "Emma Hardy"? Masato.harada (talk) 13:30, 21 October 2025 (UTC)
