“Occurrence” section too jargony

edit

As the title says, the "occurence" section of the article is difficult for those who are not experts or enthusiasts to understand. These concepts should be explained more thoroughly, and technical language shouldn't be used more than strictly necessary in my opinion. I don't have anything to say one way or the other about the accuracy of the content, as I'm not an expert. 98.113.136.162 (talk) 16:29, 5 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

We do have Simple Wikipedia/Earthquake. - FlightTime (open channel) 17:06, 5 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
As far as I know, I'm responsible for large parts of that section and you're almost certainly right. At the time, as I recall, accuracy was the most important thing. I would be very happy to work with any other editors to improve the too technical parts. Mikenorton (talk) 17:21, 5 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Oof. I see what you me about accuracy. The jargon makes it so much easier to be concise and correct at the same time. But this section definitely needs to be made more approachable. I’m also interested in working on it, but may not have the time for a while. Elriana (talk) 09:59, 9 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Intraplate earthquakes should be mentioned

edit

There’s no explanation of how earthquakes can occur away from the tectonic fault lines. Seems like this article should have at least a mention of intraplate earthquakes? 75.80.55.152 (talk) 17:11, 5 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

There certainly should be a mention, although virtually all earthquakes are caused by movement along tectonic faults, just not necessarily along tectonic plate boundaries. Any rewrite should include this. Mikenorton (talk) 17:25, 5 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

It's not clear what changes you are suggesting. Mikenorton (talk) 08:25, 30 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Try translating it to English. ~2025-43053-85 (talk) 14:34, 15 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
This is the English wikipedia. The person requesting the change should translate it to english before posting, not expect english wikipedia editors to do so for them. Common courtesy.
They cut & pasted from the destination site while providing only the top-level URL, requiring searching around on the site to find the source of the info. I gave up; I have better things to do.
As well, this user was blocked from the english wikipedia and the chinese wikipedia the same day this was posted, for "Long term abuse", which suggests it's a sockpuppet account.
Sending volunteers on a wild goose chase isn't productive, or civil. cheers. anastrophe, an editor he is. 19:01, 15 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Why does the introductory statement say 1556 Shaanxi Earthquake instead of 1976 Tangshan Earthquake?

edit

The statement "Significant historical earthquakes include the 1556 Shaanxi earthquake in China, with over 100,000 fatalities, and the 1960 Valdivia earthquake in Chile, the largest ever recorded at 9.5 magnitude." should be changed to "Significant historical earthquakes include the 1976 Tangshan earthquake in China, with 242,469-779,000 fatalities, and the 1960 Valdivia earthquake in Chile, the largest ever recorded at 9.5 magnitude." because it obviously has a higher death toll than the 1556 Shaanxi earthquake, there were also indirect deaths in the 1556 Shaanxi earthquake but they don't count here. ~2025-43053-85 (talk) 14:39, 15 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

It used that statement when the text was added in early 2024 using a death toll for the Shaanxi earthquake of 830,000, which is now not generally accepted. I've changed the text to use the 1976 Tangshan earthquake, using the figure of >300,000 used in that article. Thanks for pointing that out. Mikenorton (talk) 22:47, 16 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Agree that this change makes sense, I originally edited the 1556 earthquake statement to reflect the more accurate casualty figure (830,000 was the number that dropped from official records in the region including emigrants and those that died in the following famines, not the number of fatalities directly attributable to the earthquake), but replacing with a more recent event with a higher number of casualties makes sense.
