Background

edit

The second paragraph in the Background section should really be on a page about the Du Plessis family. It doesn't say anything about Dricus, and centuries old family background is entirely irrelevant to this page. - Rooiratel (talk) 10:44, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

As an amateur, Dricus is undefeated in official kickboxing matches. He has a kickboxing record of 33-0, with 30 of those wins coming by way of knockout. RikiLouw (talk) 10:32, 23 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. Paper9oll (🔔📝) 13:33, 23 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
As part of his background. The part where it speaks about that he started with his kickboxing at 14, he eventually ended with an official kickboxing record of 33-0 with 30 Knockouts. RikiLouw (talk) 15:45, 23 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Under his background. Where it talks about that he started with kickboxing at age of 14, please add - As an amateur, Dricus is undefeated in official kickboxing matches. IPA needed

edit

Please can someone add a South African IPA. I've only heard it in English as /ˈdrkəs dʊˈplɛs/, but that can only be considered a non-native approximation in lieu of H:IPA-AF. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 01:15, 6 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Change the comma in "Du Plessis is bilingual, he speaks English and Afrikaans." (First line under Personal Life) to either a semicolon or a ", and", since the comma alone doesn't read right VictorMcDk (talk) 18:52, 3 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Capitalization of the surname du Plessis at the beginning of a sentence

edit

According to English Grammar rules:

1. Capitalize the first word in every sentence. You should always capitalize the first letter of the first word in a sentence, no matter what the word is. Take, for example, the following sentences: The weather was beautiful. It was sunny all day. Even though the and it aren’t proper nouns, they’re capitalized here because they’re the first words in their sentences. There is one rare possible exception to this rule: a brand name that begins with a lowercase letter like eBay or iPad. Even these normally lowercase words are usually capitalized at the start of sentences, but a style guide may make an exception for them.

Source, English Thesaurus.

du Plessis at the beginning of sentences in the article should change to Du Plessis.

Do any contributor have any remark to the contrary?

If there is no proper remarks given within the next few days, I will assume that above guideline out of the English Thesaurus is acceptable.

I will then proceed to edit the article.

Thats not necessarily true, look at the city of uMhlanga's page. Nswix (talk) 21:37, 21 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Looking at the comment/s, I dont see any proper explanation of why the use of the surname Du Plessis shouldn't be changed.
Im intending to edit the use of the surname Du Plessis in the article, also in the middle of sentences, as it is a proper name.
After editing I wont consider it kind or professional of any contributor to roll back my edit, especially because I did start a conversation about it.

So, I gave an example, then you ignored it, and stated that its set in stone, you decided how it should be, no one can ever roll it back...? Nswix (talk) 18:38, 30 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
uMhlanga yes,
Look at the English Wikipedia pages of Barend du Plessis and FW de Klerk Odriskelmac11 (talk) 08:23, 31 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
The articles you listed capitalize the surnames at the beginning of sentences but not in the middle. I suggest this article should follow the same format with the capitalized "Du Plessis" being used when beginning a sentence and the lowercase "du Plessis" used when it is not. Change "Du Plessis represented his team, CIT MMA, at a Submission Kings Quintet event, where he submitted all five members of the Gracie Barra team to win the match." to "Du Plessis represented his team, CIT MMA, at a Submission Kings Quintet event, where he submitted four members of the Gracie Barra team to win the match, with one member of the Gracie Barra team losing by disqualification due to stalling.".

This can be clearly seen in the source video provided by the source article (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMt_e1ARDVE&t=1142s) from 13:20 to 13:50. Du Plessis does not submit the second member of the Gracie Barra team. It is very clear through the video that Du Plessis is not applying a submission hold and that his opponent does not "tap", signifying a successful submission hold from Du PLessis. The commentary team at the event also explicitly states as much, saying "So what happened is, Wayne (Du Plessis's opponent) got DQed for 3 'Shidos', for inactivity, however Dricuss also got a 'Shido.'".

"Shidos" is what the Quintet grappling format calls "stalling" due to it's origins in Japan and Judo, and would roughly translate to "minor penalty" in English, as seen here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shido. The specific Quintet Rules about "Shidos" can be see here https://www.quintet-fight.com/en/rule/.

It is also worth noting that the title of said source article is false, as it also states that Du Plessis submits 5 Gracie Barra team members.

Alternatively, you could remove this section from the page altogether, because I believe it is only mentioned under the assumption that Du Plessis in fact submitted all 5 of his opponents, which is false. Joeyjoesalads (talk) 21:51, 19 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Done I removed it (the source wasn't good enough for a WP:BLP). No objection to it being restored if a better source is found. M.Bitton (talk) 22:31, 19 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
