Why does a single paragraph first denote statistics on immigrating populations and then proceed directly to listing murder rates? Seems for the sake of clarity we might want to parse the two discussions, since they don't really have anything concrete to do with one another. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.46.160.100 (talk) 22:24, 5 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

This article is in bad shape, and speaks to someone's POV about crime rather than the subject at hand:Demographics. Jacksinterweb (talk) 23:20, 9 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
I removed the crime section because it shouldn't be in the demographics article. Actually, the crime section was originally in an older version of Houston, Texas and was moved here (temporarily, I thought) when that article was being trimmed for size. The phrase "illegal aliens" needs to be changed. I suggest "undocumented immigrants". Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.115.2.175 (talk) 23:12, 5 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Some of the links to the US Census bureau are no longer available. It would help to have updated access to that information. Ensquared (talk) 21:57, 3 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Nigerian population inconsistency

edit

“Charles W. Corey of the U.S. Department of State said that it has been estimated that Greater Houston has the largest Nigerian expatriate population in the United States. As of 2018 about 150,000 Nigerian Americans live in the Houston area. The 2017 American Community Survey estimated that 65,000 Nigerian Americans lived in Texas, the vast majority of which reside in Houston. As of 2003, Houston had 23,000 Nigerian American residents… According to the Migration Policy Institute, 2018 estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau state that 40,000 Houston residents were of recent Nigerian origins.” These numbers don’t add up. 150,000 Nigerian Americans in Houston in one sentence, and 65,000 in all of Texas next? There seems to be an error. I got a Wikipedia account just to fix this!

@Tealtigers: Hi! These are different estimates from different groups of people at different times. The 2018 Morago article stated: "It’s where an estimated 150,000 Nigerian Americans have made their home,[...]" The citation for the 2017 American Community Survey just links to https://www.census.gov/, so I have not found the precise source of that data yet. The 2003 NYT article by Simon Romero stated: "There are about 20,000 people from just one country -- Nigeria -- here already, for example." ("here" is Houston). The 2024 New Yorker article by Hannah Goldfield stated: "According to census data, the number of people of Nigerian ancestry living in the Houston metropolitan area more than doubled between 2010 and 2022, from more than twenty thousand to nearly fifty-three thousand."
I don't know exactly how or where they got each figure... (Goldfield said she got it from the US Census)
