Black comedy → Dark humor – WP:COMMONNAME, I see no one call it black comedy anymore, the more commonly used term now is dark humour/dark humor. GuesanLoyalist (talk) 02:25, 28 November 2025 (UTC)

• Observations: Britannica uses "black humor". Encyclopedia.com uses black humor. However, Google trends results for search terms over the past five years shows "dark humor" slightly edging out "black comedy" (except for July-Nov 2025), trailed by third place "dark comedy", and lastly the two encyclopedias' choice "black humor". WP:COMMONNAME focuses on reliable sources rather than popular usage, so adjective "black" is probably favored here over "dark". I don't see nouns humor vs comedy as being the defining issue. —RCraig09 (talk) 03:28, 28 November 2025 (UTC)

• Support per others, as "black comedy", especially in American English, can be easily confused to mean "comedy by black people" rather than the actual meaning. (I would actually prefer the title to be Dark comedy but if "dark humor" is the more common name then so be it.) silviaASH (inquire within) 16:06, 1 December 2025 (UTC)
• Weak support Dark humor per nom. Google Ngram shows this is, as of 2022, the more common term. (When restricting to American English the results are less dramatic.) Overall it appears that many of the bolded synonyms listed in the lead are in use. 'Weak' because the results don't show a clear WP:COMMONNAME but rather a variety of terms in use. Discussion of recent page move

I want to raise a concern about the move from "black comedy" to "dark humor". Although WP:COMMONNAME was given as the reason, "black comedy" is still a long-established term in academic, critical, and historical sources, and it is used intentionally in many related articles.

The move also caused many incoming links to redirect to "Dark humor", which can affect clarity and consistency for readers, especially where "black comedy" is meant as a specific genre term rather than a loose synonym. Redirects don't always preserve that distinction.

Keeping "Black comedy" as the main title, with "Dark humor" as a redirect or alternative name, may better reflect established usage and avoid unnecessary disruption across related pages. ~2025-34319-84 (talk) 09:32, 9 January 2026 (UTC)
