Misleading text about Bishop of Oxford?

edit

'In 1991, Bryant left the ordained ministry, after deciding that being gay was incompatible with being a priest. Statements made by Bishop of Oxford Richard Harries also influenced his decision.' Does this give the impression that Richard Harries is, or at least was, anti-gay? The reference (a Guardian article) says 'I remember the Bishop of Oxford saying, "I've never laid hands on a gay man" a week after he'd ordained me.' The implication -- but it's not entirely clear what Bryant meant or how the journalist understood it -- may be that the Bishop knew Bryant was gay but pretended he wasn't, or pretended not to know that he was. No other 'statement' is mentioned in that article, so 'Statements' is not supported by the reference. Bryant was ordained deacon in 1986 and priest in 1987, so it's unlikely that the remark reportedly made by Harries a week after one of those events had much to do with his deciding to leave the ministry in 1991. The article suggests that it had more to do with the CofE's Issues in Human Sexuality document, which was anti-gay. I'm minded to delete the sentence about Richard Harries unless someone comes up with something more convincing. Snugglepuss (talk) 11:24, 18 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
