1) it is the same in both Malayalam and Tamil (as Malayalam was still a dialect at that point). So, Cheran not Seran as Tamil does not recognise Sa, only Cha. The grantha ஸ் is used for sa, and ச is always cha in Iyal tamizh (written Tamil). It's only in speech this gets corrupted.

2)Secondly, Sangam convention is that the family name precedes the individual's name, that is, it is always Cheran Chenguttavan not Chenguttava Cholan.
