The windows "offline file/folder" functionnality offers similar operation for network drives, should it not be mentionned here? Olivier.rieux (talk) 13:27, 19 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Early iterations of Briefcase (Win XP?) allowed you to synchronise a briefcase located on a removable drive with multiple computers (not sure how many but at least two). It kept track of the latest timestamps on each of the multiple computers. This allowed you to synchronise multiple files between (for example) a home computer and a work computer without having any direct communication link between the two machines. This support was dropped in later versions of Windows which always used the first slot in the table. Mike (talk) 08:06, 3 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

My memory was correct. The multiple computer sync worked in XP but not in Win7. Ref: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/2421963/how-can-i-make-windows-briefcase-work-right?page=2#answers I did find a rather crude workaround if one of the computers was still using XP. You created the briefcase on the USB drive using the Windows 7 machine, loaded the files you wanted, and then took the USB drive to the XP machine and synchronised it there. XP recognised that another computer was using the first slot in the table of timestamp info and created a second slot for itself. Windows 7 was unaware of the second slot and therefore continued to be happy to use the briefcase. Mike (talk) 08:41, 3 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

ConfirmFileOp setting

edit

The article says this setting has no apparent effect. I have not confirmed by testing with briefcases, but at least in some contexts this setting has a purpose: "Set this entry to 0 to avoid a "You Are Deleting a System Folder" warning when deleting or moving the folder."
