Notability Reassessment (updated draft)

edit

The original decline was based on the impression that the draft relied on a single scholarly source and did not show significant coverage in other secondary sources. In revising the draft, core Wikipedia policy compliances have been strengthened:

(1) Notability: The article now references a broader set of reliable sources and reflects the reception history of Gersman's work in South Africa.

(a) Gersman is documented in the database of the Congress for Jewish Culture, a recognized cultural institution. His entry appears in the Biographical Dictionary of Modern Yiddish Literature ("Leksikon fun der Nayer Yidisher Literatur"). Vol. 2. Marstin Press, 1958. p.327. See original Yiddish entry and its English translation. This functions as an authoritative biographical reference within the Yiddish cultural sphere. The earlier decline cited WP:BLOGS. This was a misunderstanding: The link in question (yleksikon.blogspot.com) was actually a digital access point to this Leksikon (The Biographical Dictionary of Modern Yiddish Literature, 1958). The draft now cites the original published source directly, in accordance with WP:BLOGS and WP:RS.

(b) Additional scholarly coverage has been incorporated. Besides Livnat's recent study, Gersmans is discussed in recent Yiddish studies scholarship (e.g. Veronica Belling's recent reflections, and furthermore in the classic historical overview by J.A. Poliva (Johannesburg, 1961), situating Gersman within the broader context of the history of South African Yiddish press and indexing him across multiple publications, demonstrating that he was notable in independent secondary literature long before recent research.

(c) At the time of the article's decline, multiple obituary articles from independent newspapers (Jewish Telegraph Agency, Zionist Record, SA Jewish Times, Rand Daily Mail) were not yet included in the Wikipedia article though. These obituaries provide independent secondary coverage of Gersman's role as editor and publisher. While eulogies require caution due to potentially evaluative language, Wikipedia policy allows them to support verifiable facts. They do demonstrate Gersman's death was considered significant and noteworthy by several different publications - both newspapers in South Africa and The American Jewish Year Book.

With these sources now added, the draft no longer rests on one study alone but demonstrates broader public and scholarly relevance.

(2) Verifiability: I specified page references in Livnat's recent nurinst 2024 study, ensuring readers can directly check the referenced details. Previously unsourced statements are now supported with verifiable citations.

(3) Neutrality: For example, I clarified the founding of the Afrikaner Yidishe Tsaytung by distinguishing between some older sources (e.g. the JTA obituary) that implied Gersman was the founder and both newer and earlier research that identify Ben‑Zion Almuni as the actual founder. This correction reflects the balance of available scholarship in line with WP:NPOV. Tartigradesinspace (talk)
