Barry R Bloom - Update summary – September 2025

edit

I’ve made a number of updates to the Barry R. Bloom article to address the maintenance tags and to improve readability and sourcing. The main changes are:

  • Article structure: reorganized sections into Academic career, Research contributions, Policy and advisory roles, Selected publications, and Awards and honors for better flow.
  • Research coverage: expanded details on Bloom’s malaria work with WHO, his tuberculosis studies (vitamin D–dependent antimicrobial pathway and aerosol vaccine delivery), and his role in COVID-19 policy and communications (Massachusetts vaccine advisory group, Harvard press briefings).
  • Links and references: replaced dead links with archived versions, standardized citation formatting, and updated key references (Harvard Gazette, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health).
  • Publications: added several landmark papers (Science 1966; Annual Review of Immunology 1984; Science 2006) plus a full citation for The Vaccine Book (2nd ed., Academic Press/Elsevier, 2016), co-edited with Paul-Henri Lambert.
  • Infobox: cleaned up “known for,” awards, and workplaces. A photo, birth date, and birthplace can be added once reliable, freely licensed sources are available.

Tags

  • The “update” tag (May 2021) has been addressed through new content on malaria, COVID-19, and by fixing broken links.
  • The “BLP sources” tag (August 2024) remains for now, since additional inline citations would help strengthen sections on awards and advisory roles.
