Genres

edit

The Game Informer sources lists several sources for the genre. We should not and assume what they mean by these genres and if they list them all individually, we should respect that and not say "well this is a sub-genre of that". I think more reviews/opinions from third-party sources will help apply WP:WEIGHT here. Andrzejbanas (talk) 02:47, 28 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

GI is only one source, so trying to cram all the genres they mention is not appropriate, we're looking to summarize broadly all sources commenting on the game. From multiple sources, it is a definitely a roguelike that combines multiple genres, one of those definitely being a city builder. But there's not a strong consensus of what the main game falls under, outside of being compared to games like Breakout or Arkanoid, which are both straight up action games though there is also some support that these can be called "block breakers" which is breifly discussed in the Breakout article. If we had a better developed section or article on ball breakers, that would be the right genre, but without it, "action" is the best way we have it here on WP. And given that a roguelike with action elements is an "action roguelike", that category seems like a very straightforward, non SYNTH summary of the whole of the sources, in addition to the city builder one. (We also have Vampire Survivors-like as a possible case instead of action roguelike, but that really needs better fleshing out too). Then you get a mish-mash of a whole range of genres, like Polygon throwing out "deck building roguelike" which doesn't make a lot of sense at the surface level. Since we try to limit genres to two at most as an infobox line and first lede sentence, "action roguelike" and "city building" looks like the best way to describe what the summary of RSes are saying about the game, with later lede and the body sections there to expand on the additional genres. (And I'll note that we purposely ignore the "roguelike" vs "roguelite" disticntion becuase there is no firm definition of how a roguelite differes from a roguelike, and with Ball X Pit sources are also mixed on the term. I agree it's in appropriate to just cram them in, but picking and choosing which ones we think are "most appropriate" isn't correct either and would be against WP:STICKTOTHESOURCE, as it would be "using them in ways inconsistent with the intention of the source". We don't know if that author considers those genres sub-genres or anything, so we shouldn't presume so. Just because we don't have an article on a genre also doesn't mean we can't say it was described in such a way. While I agree that an endless list of genres is not useful, in media where the genres are such a mish-mash, perhaps it's best to let the prose do the talking instead of ignoring what a source says for some arbitrary infobox rules.Andrzejbanas (talk) 06:09, 28 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
But there are agreed on genres when looking across multiple sources, minimally "roguelike" and "city builder". And most others don't mention action game but a genre that falls under action games, which is why it is not a stretch to say "action roguelike". Since we're supposed to summarize multiple sources, and video game genres are not precise things, we have some reasonable flexibility here. (eg trying to call this a Soulslike would be completely wrong) Masem (t) 12:30, 28 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

There are a number of uses of "adventure" that I think should be "adventurer". Haven't done an edit to Wikipedia in something like 20 years, so sticking a comment here first rather than charging right in with a change. TheFluffy1 (talk) 10:52, 3 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
