ATS PERSONNEL 1941 +

edit

I note that the Land Army Girls and the forestry Girls who were functioning during the WWII years are to be acknowledged and to receive medals. What happened to the young women conscripted into the Forces at that time? Are they to be acknowledge as well? My mother who is now 86 did not receive any campaign medals for feeding the troops as an army cook. --88.110.85.250 (talk) 21:37, 16 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well, she should have received the War Medal 1939–1945 and possibly the Defence Medal. Servicewomen were always eligible for the same campaign medals as servicemen. -- Necrothesp (talk) 09:05, 17 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Redirects needed

edit

Finally found this page after searches on ATS & A.T.S. failed (Google to the rescue!). Needs redirects & add to dab page; I'll do 'em if I get there first, but feel free.... D Anthony Patriarche (talk) 12:03, 24 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

It's already listed on the ATS page. I've created a redirect from A.T.S.. -- Necrothesp (talk) 15:26, 24 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Auxiliary Territorial Service

The Auxiliary Territorial Service was the women's branch of the British Army during the Second World War. It was formed on 9 September 1938 as a successor to the First World War-era Women's Auxiliary Army Corps, and existed until 1 February 1949, when it was merged into the Women's Royal Army Corps. This photograph shows ATS members working on a Churchill tank in 1942.

Pronounced as an acronym?

edit

The lead says that ATS is "often pronounced as an acronym". I dispute that. An acronym is an abbreviation or set of initials that is pronounced as a complete word, like PIN or Laser. I have never heard ATS pronounced like that, but always separate letters. Does anyone have a source for this claim? If not, I propose to delete it. Mike Marchmont (talk) 09:41, 11 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

In the absence of any claims to the contrary, I have now deleted the statement in question. Mike Marchmont (talk) 10:33, 18 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
It certainly was used as an acronym, just like WAAF and Wren. OED: "The colloquial singular form At, AT, A.T., a member of the A.T.S. derives from the pronunciation as an acronym rather than an initialism." -- Necrothesp (talk) 10:52, 29 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Necrothesp:, thanks for clarifying that. I must say that I don't ever recall hearing it pronounced as an acronym, but I will defer to your knowledge (and the OED's). Mike Marchmont (talk) 16:14, 29 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
