Requested move
edit- The following discussion is an archived discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the proposal was PAGE MOVED per discussion below. -GTBacchus(talk) 19:28, 28 January 2008 (UTC)
Nominator's Rationale: There is no need to have Florida in the title. There is no other island by this name. There have been intervening redirects and an administrator's approval is necessary for this move. clariosophic (talk) 16:39, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
- Oppose. It's not Alcatraz Island. I'd just redirect Anna Maria Island to this article. WHATaintNOcountryIeverHEARDofDOtheySPEAKenglishINwhat (talk) 04:55, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
- Support if there are no other Wikipedia articles named "Anna Maria Island". Do not disambiguate unless necessary. --Polaron | Talk 20:25, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
- Support. I reiterate my nomination rationale and my comments above. Anna Maria Island is NOT a settlement. It is an island which has 3 settlements or cities on it as follows: on the north end Anna Maria, Florida, in the middle Holmes Beach, Florida and on the south end Bradenton Beach, Florida. If an island is not a settlement and there is no other island with the same name, the island naming convention says that it can stand alone. clariosophic (talk) 21:51, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

Gulf of America
editGet it right. Update !! 2600:100C:B2B8:11D4:B550:5604:C6EF:B140 (talk) 23:45, 18 March 2025 (UTC)
- Per the consensus established on Talk:Gulf of Mexico, the internationally recognised term is "Gulf of Mexico" and will for the foreseeable future remain as such. We don't bow to the whim of any government and what they want something to be called. We go off what reliable sources refer to things as. Aydoh8[contribs] 23:48, 18 March 2025 (UTC)
- Well, it is The Gulf of America it just passed as such in congress so you need to change it. Unless you're a default communist, which you probably are 47.186.95.204 (talk) 19:38, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
- The United States Congress, composed of the Senate and the House of Representatives, has not passed the bill. Only the House has. The Senate has not yet voted. But that's at least doubly irrelevant in any case. If Congress passes the bill and can then convince the U.S. Board on Geographic Names to agree to the change, it would apply only within the United States and U.S. territorial waters, and in strict terms, only for government agencies (and free agents who choose to accept it, with many challenges based on Congress shall make no law [...] abridging the freedom of speech). The United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN) coordinates geographical names internationally, and maintains the official name for the Gulf of Mexico as "Gulf of Mexico". UNGEGN's decisions are based on international consensus. Barefoot through the chollas (talk) 20:30, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
- Obviously, we can see where your political affiliations lie. I got news for ya kamala, lost!! 47.186.95.204 (talk) 13:46, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
- Please see the Frequently Asked Questions at the top of Talk:Gulf of Mexico. By the way, this is the English-language Wikipedia, not the 'official U.S. government Wikipedia', so we go with majority usage in the English-speaking world. Donald Albury 14:27, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
- Cardinal principle: political "affiliations" are irrelevant. Barefoot through the chollas (talk) 14:40, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
