His nickname, not surname, was "ack ack", which comes from a mispronunciation of the German number 8, acht. A certain German anti aircraft piece of 8.8 cm was called "acht acht" by the Germans. My guess is Haldane picked up this "ack ack" because his first and middle initials were A. A., like the A. A. for anti aircraft. BlueRockThrush (talk) 19:08, 15 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
