Hi, I'll begin this review shortly! Sophisticatedevening🐞(talk) 18:35, 11 July 2025 (UTC)
Prose
..and displays unusual behavior
- This should be elaborated on more as to what "usual" behavior is for an octopus. Is it unusual from rest of the genus? The family? What are some of the usual behaviors expected from them?..including bipedal walking as well as tool use through
- I would split this sentence....located in the family Octopodidae, genus Amphioctopus.
- Instead of a comma, I would go for just "and".Taki chose the Latin name marginatus due to the pale border around the eyes.
- What does the Latin word mean?In 1976, Z. Dong
- Is the full name available?..in what the Melbourne Museum has described as "true tool use".
- Three citations is too many after this, at most two should be needed.observed the coconut octopus uses tools
- uses --> using or used. While the species may be threatened by fishing
- Mild editorializing.- I would like to see some expansion on the Distribution and Habitat section, or you could merge the two sections as well.
- Same for the characteristics, I see there is definitely more material out there that can give more context on it.
Spot checks/sourcing
Based off of Special:permalink/1300018943:
- 2: The article states that
Taki chose the Latin name marginatus due to the pale border around the eyes
, however the source only states that the Japanese name was given due to living on Cod fishing grounds. It does not mention the Latin name.
- 4: I see the mention of the color display, but where does it say anything about the weight being 400 grams?

- Ref 7 is missing a page number, tag added in article.
- 10: Checks out.

- 13: Missing page number, tag added.
Copyright/images
- Earwigs detected 27% from , however that text appears to have been written prior to that article appearing, so I think we're good there.
- File:Coconut Octopus (Amphioctopus marginatus) (6079648725).jpg - Flickr verified
- File:Octopus shell.jpg - CC by SA 3.0, featured picture.
- I personally feel the octopus shell one is too close to the infobox, I would move it below a little bit.
Other
- I am worried that this lede does not adequately summarize the article; I think it would take a little more than 61 words.
Comments
- Placing on hold pending sourcing + prose issues. Sophisticatedevening🐞(talk) 17:18, 12 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Sophisticatedevening: Thank you so much for starting this review! I have fixed all of the sourcing issues; the first two issues raised the text is supported in the sources (for the second issue about the weight this is in the FAO source which is linked). I have added page numbers for both book citations. I have also fixed most of the prose issues you have raised; and I have moved the photo down a bit. I've merged the distribution and habitat, and whilst I'm currently struggling to find much more on physical characteristics that is not overly technical I will continue to look. I will also look to expand the lede tomorrow. CoconutOctopus talk 21:14, 12 July 2025 (UTC)
- I've added a little more to the lede, currently trying to get my hands on a copy of Mark Norman's Cephalopods: A World Guide to see if there's much of use there. CoconutOctopus talk 13:07, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
- Sounds great! Let me know when you've finished that. Sophisticatedevening(talk) 13:23, 14 July 2025 (UTC)

Cremastra's comments
@CoconutOctopus: Not the reviewer, but I'll note that the article seems to me to have a coverage issue. There are prominent papers on embryonic development and genetics, but I don't see discussion of either topic in the article. Given the amount of research available, the article is quite short (650 words: just over half of my mental lower boundary for an ordinary biology GA). Cremastra (talk) 16:16, 16 July 2025 (UTC)
- Heya, thanks for the ping! I'll have a look into those topics and see about adding a section. CoconutOctopus talk 16:47, 16 July 2025 (UTC)
