Genus vs subgenus

edit

Are these the same thing? I can't find any official promotions of the subgenus Alanstonea to a genus. Alanstonea - Wikidata (subgenus) and Alanstonea - Wikidata (genus). Sevenstxrsquid (talk) 07:19, 9 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Sevenstxrsquid:, no formal nomenclatural act is needed to change a subgenus into a genus or vice versa. The name at the other rank is automatically established under the ICZN's principle of coordination. Wikipedia of course should be able to cite a source that treats a taxon either as a genus or subgenus. ITIS does so and is included in the taxonbar but, is not cited in this article. Okay, thanks. I didn't know this. Should the link on the List of Mosquito Genera page be a redirect to this then? Sevenstxrsquid (talk) 01:42, 10 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Sevenstxrsquid:, I think the link on the list of mosquito genera is OK as it is (as a redirect). Wikipedia's list of mosquito genera splits out quite a few other genera from Aedes that are treated as subgenera in List of Aedes species, and the relevant species articles on Wikipedia generally follow a broad circumscription of Aedes. I have not looked into it enough to be sure whether there is more support for treating Aedes in a broad or narrow sense, but as it currently stands on Wikipedia, the broad sense is consistent with more articles, and List of mosquito genera is inconsistent with that.
