Tables: don't delete, just collapse!
editMy fellow Wikipedians,
· Thank you for your interest and commitment. · This is an article about a product, in this case a motor vehicle component or spare part. Strictly speaking, this article should not exist, as Wikipedia is not a marketing or repair advice platform. · However, there is now a “WikiProject Automobile.” Such a project would not be expected in a traditional encyclopedia either: articles about motor vehicles have no place in a traditional encyclopedia, with the possible exception of the Ford Model T and the VW Beetle. · Traditional printed encyclopedias had up to 300,000, maybe 400,000 keywords. The English-language Wikipedia has over 7 million and says itself that it goes beyond traditional encyclopedias. That's why the “WikiProject Automobile” is conceivable. But that doesn't justify it. · Among these 7 million entries are some entries on automatic vehicle transmissions, which are initially mere product descriptions. To be worthy of an encyclopedia, the articles must clearly go beyond this mere product description. · For automatic transmissions, this means that the wheel set concept used must be explained: - How are the individual gear ratios created? - Why does one transmission with, say, 4 planetary wheel sets have only 5 forward gears, while another has 7 and yet others have 8, 9, or even 10? - How can these differences be explained? Only the answer to this question makes the article of general interest. · To this end, this article contains two key tables, among others. The first describes how economical the construction of the transmission is compared to others. The second explains the gear set concept and shows how the individual gear ratios are achieved. · The comprehensive synopsis of the basic algebra for the transmission is the particular strength of the tables: mathematics is generally considered uncool, but as the designer of an encyclopedia, you shouldn't let that put you off. So uncool, in fact, that you can't find algebra anywhere else. · So it's a good thing that the explanations can be understood by anyone who has mastered the four basic arithmetic operations and has a calculator or spreadsheet program. All it takes is care and a little patience. No special prior knowledge is required. It's not rocket science. The tables are therefore expressly not aimed at experts, but at anyone with an interest in technology. · Occasionally, people express a desire to delete these two tables, claiming that they are too extensive and complicated. However, without these tables, the articles would be nothing more than product advertisements. · To avoid unnecessarily disrupting the flow of reading, these two tables can easily be collapsed. To do this, they are set to “collapsible.” · If you want both tables to be collapsed by default, you can easily set them to “collapsed.” Deleting them is not an option, at least not for an encyclopedia. · Thank you for your cooperation. · Cheers · Peter Musikgeniesser (talk) 20:14, 21 January 2026 (UTC)
