editAUSTRALIAN RADIO: The Technical Story 1923-1983 by Winston Muscio, ISBN 0-949924-82-2, gives the original name as "Sydney Broadcasters", later changed to "Broadcasters Limited". What is the origin for the "Broadcasting" names in the article?

Broadcasting
is in the title because they are currently an affiliate of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. The corporation's governing legislation, section five of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Act 1983 (Cth) specifies that this is their official name. Fair use rationale for Image:702 logo SML.png
edit
Image:702 logo SML.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
Broadcast Channels
editNo mention is made in this article of 702 ABC Sydney's use of digital radio as a broadcast method, it only states they broadcast at 702 kHz on the AM band. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.167.1.41 (talk) 03:59, 18 April 2011 (UTC)
Requested move 16 March 2026
edit- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: No consensus. I don't see the point of dragging this one through another relisting as consensus isn't particularly close to being reached, discussion died nearly a month ago and the previous two relistings didn't succeed in restarting it. ABC Radio Sydney → 702 ABC Sydney – Recently, this became the station's official name. Per WP:UCRN, the station's frequency "702" is more recognisable than the name "ABC Radio Sydney", especially with long-time listeners and much easier to pronounce if you are mentioning the radio station in a conversation. This change should be made because WP:OFFICIALNAME does not outright rule out the possibility of using the most up to date name for an article's subject, just that reliable sources should commonly acknowledge the presence of a different name, the essay goes on to state "In many cases, the official name will be the best choice to fit these criteria". - Comment: I found an ABC press release from last December that talks about ABC Local Radio's summer lineup, and it mentions the "702 ABC Sydney" name instead of ABC Radio Sydney. There are at least a few ABC News articles that mention the name before December, but this is the earliest official press release I could find that does not use ABC Radio Sydney. This article was first archived on the Wayback Machine in November and has the ABC Radio Sydney tag, but mentions 702 ABC Sydney within the text, and this article from June 2025 also mentions the current name. Both of these articles currently have the new name as a tag, but on the Wayback Machine they instead have the old name as a tag.
- Also, the Sydney Morning Herald today used the new name in an article (soft paywall but should be readable) about the staff strike, which might indicate that the name is official and being reported on by other reliable sources outside of the ABC.
- I'm not sure if this is enough to warrant a move right now, but its a sign that this name may be the official brand of the station now. Funnykoalavinecompilation (talk) 06:09, 25 March 2026 (UTC)
- Oppose, I would beg to differ that 702 ABC Sydney is easier to pronounce than ABC Radio Sydney. People don't usually refer to radio stations by their frequencies. They will say they heard something on the ABC, 2GB or 2DayFM, not on 702 ABC Sydney, 873 2GB or 104.1 2DayFM. The current name is in keeping with all the other members of Category:ABC Local Radio, not seeing a compelling case to break that. Creijpink (talk) 23:32, 17 March 2026 (UTC)
- Firstly, the station is now referred to by its callsign on‑air and online. That is a verifiable, current branding practice, not a historical one. If the ABC has shifted its presentation back to callsign‑based identifiers, then the article should reflect the name the broadcaster itself is using today
- Secondly, while it’s true that listeners often refer to stations conversationally as “the ABC”, “2GB”, or “2DayFM”, that doesn’t negate the fact that the broadcaster’s formal brand is what governs article titles. The argument that “people don’t usually refer to stations by their frequencies” doesn’t really apply here, because the current ABC branding is callsign‑based, not frequency‑based. “702 ABC Sydney” was a frequency‑plus‑brand construction; “ABC Radio Sydney” was a network‑style construction; but if the ABC has reinstated callsigns, then the relevant comparison is between ABC’s own usage and reliable sources, not between frequencies and colloquial shorthand.
- Thirdly, consistency with other members of Category:ABC Local Radio is only relevant if the network itself is using a consistent naming scheme. If the ABC has moved back to callsigns across the network, then the category will naturally follow that shift. If the ABC has not done so, then the burden is on us to show reliable sources demonstrating the current naming practice for this specific station.
- At this point, the key issue is sourcing. If the ABC has officially reverted to callsign‑based branding, that should be supported with a reliable citation—e.g., an ABC corporate announcement, updated branding guidelines, or coverage in reputable media. Once that source is provided, the naming question becomes straightforward under policy.
- Until then, the discussion shouldn’t hinge on personal impressions of what is “easier to pronounce” or what listeners “usually say”, but on verifiable, published usage. Robbo128 (talk) 08:29, 18 March 2026 (UTC)

- Support It looks like, sometime between January 31 and March 3, the ABC changed this station's name, judging by Internet Archive snapshots of the Sydney page on its website. The page at abc.net.au/listen/radio suggests that this treatment has been given to the capital cities only: 666 ABC Canberra, 105.7 ABC Darwin, 774 ABC Melbourne, 891 ABC Adelaide, 936 ABC Hobart, 612 ABC Brisbane, 102.5 ABC Perth. I would like to see if these names have made it into the press. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 05:08, 22 March 2026 (UTC)
- Oppose, think we should wait until we see how WP:RS report it. Just because an organization rebrands, it can still be more commonly referred to by a legacy name. Manzheron (talk) 20:03, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
- Note to closing editor, while I am going to WP:AGF, the nominator did engage in some, albeit light, WP:CANVASSING, notifying some editors of this discussion. Editor has been asked to refrain from doing so in the future. Manzheron (talk) 20:03, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
- This does not seem to be a problem per that guideline because the guideline goes on to say that an acceptable scenario is to post "On the user talk pages of concerned editors." Qwerty123M (talk) 23:00, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
