I will review this one. A.Cython(talk) 23:36, 15 February 2026 (UTC)
I enjoyed reading the article about the 1990 snooker championship, which had some 'fireworks'. Overall, the article is well written, structured, and sourced. It is ready for GA provided some minor issues addressed. A.Cython(talk) 07:13, 16 February 2026 (UTC)
Various
edit- No edit wars
- Figures look ok with appropriate justification and figure captions.
- No copyright violations detected, Earwig's Copyvio Detector gave 9.9% mostly on phrases often used in the game.
Prose
edit- WPBSA avoid using non obvious acronyms at the infobox whenever possible, keep the rest, e.g., ENG, etc.
- Qualifying rounds highest break: £3,000. Drop the dot at the end.
- Stephen Hendry who add comma before "who"
- Hendry received £120,000 from the total prize fund of £620,800. Avoid repeating information in the lead, i.e., award prizes. Consider rewriting. You could say, but you are not obliged to follow,
- "There was a total prize fund of £620,800." and then at the end "Hendry received £120,000 out of the total prize fund."
- clearance of 135 the break add comma after 135
- consecutive frames leaving Hendry add comma after leaving
- the day he perceived that White that showed comma after "day" and remove one of the "that" (second one)
- (also referred to as the 1990 Embassy World Snooker Championship for the purposes of sponsorship) I feel this is a longer than usual parenthesis, which breaks the reading flow. We want the reader to easily read the first sentence. Consider placing it as a note with efn template or something similar.
- Franciso fluked fix name spelling, i.e., Francisco
- Founded in the late 19th century by British Army soldiers stationed in India,[2] the cue sport was popular in the British Isles.[1] However, in the modern era, which started in 1969 when the World Championship reverted to a knockout format,[3] it has become increasingly popular worldwide, especially in East and Southeast Asian nations such as China, Hong Kong and Thailand. Consider rewriting as I was getting confused. For example, I assume you mean:
- Founded in the late 19th century by British Army soldiers stationed in India,[2] since the cue sport was popular in the British Isles.[1]
- In 1969, the World Championship changed to a knockout format and since then it has become increasingly popular worldwide, especially in East and Southeast Asian nations such as China, Hong Kong and Thailand. (add appropriate wikilinks, e.g., China, Hong Kong etc)
- United Kingdom by the BBC add wikilink to United Kingdom and BBC (add wikilink to United Kingdom at the lead too)
- British Isles add wikilink
- Joe Davis won the first World Championship in 1927, hosted by the Billiards Association and Control Council, the final match being held at Camkin's Hall in Birmingham, England. This looks a bit out of place since the rest of the paragraph describes the 1990 tournament. I suspect the intention was to briefly describe the history of the tournament. Either expand its history or remove it. Having the a brief history of the tournament is FA material not GA. However, consistency is needed for GA.
- "professional attitude ha[d]" been diabolical" why there are three quotation marks? Also, I think you need to provide a little more context as to what this means.
I didn't wikilink countries, per MOS:OL. I changed "diabolical" to "poor". Hopefully everything else has been addressed. BennyOnTheLoose (talk) 16:11, 16 February 2026 (UTC)
Neutrality
editOverall it is ok, except for one:
- and abused the media. this is a bit vague and easy to misinterpret. Either clarify exactly what were his actions (i.e., abuse of media) with appropriate WP:RS or remove it. This also does not appear to be relevant for the tournament. The previous actions are appear ok as they are specific enough. Note that citation #37 says that Higgins accused the organization of corruption, should this be part of the description, if we go?
- I've amended the text and added online citations. BennyOnTheLoose (talk) 13:36, 16 February 2026 (UTC)
- Oh, and it is mentioned in multiple books alongside the tournament, so I think it is relevant here. Happy to discuss. BennyOnTheLoose (talk) 15:14, 16 February 2026 (UTC)
- My concern is not whether something happened, but rather how to present the info in a neutral way. Note that this incident involves living people and so we need to be more careful than usual. Also, when you add sources please make sure that the references do not generate new errors: I see a new error related to Harv error: duplicate target for CITEREFSmith1990. A.Cython(talk) 16:05, 16 February 2026 (UTC)
- Are further changes needed on this? The short BBC Sport article on 1990 also includes material about Higgins. Regards, BennyOnTheLoose (talk) 17:34, 16 February 2026 (UTC)
Sources
editSpot check: 8, 19, 29, 35, 36, 37, 39, 48
- Citation #8 should it not wpbsa be in capitals?
- I've tweaked the citation. BennyOnTheLoose (talk) 15:09, 16 February 2026 (UTC)
- Fourth qualifying round losers: £2062.50 This is an odd number compared to the other award figures. Could you please confirm this. Note that citations #36 & #19 do not provide this. Unfortunately, I do not have access to citation #18.
- I found more dteails in Smith 1990, which confirms that amount. By my reckoning, the sum of prize moneys now adds up to the expected total. BennyOnTheLoose (talk) 15:09, 16 February 2026 (UTC)
- Is Downer 2019 a reliable source? It says self-published, which is avoided in WP. Is there not an alternative source?
- Just to jump in on this, Chris Downer is a SPS, indeed, but is the lede historian of snooker (along with maybe Clive Everton and Mike Shamos, maybe) who did statistics for the BBC and Eurosport. We've had this discussion a few times at FAC and always deemed as ok. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 14:49, 16 February 2026 (UTC)
- Lee Vilenski do you have a source for Chris Downer doing work for the BBC? Are you perhaps confusing him with Chris Turner? Regards, BennyOnTheLoose (talk) 15:10, 16 February 2026 (UTC)
- oh, I meant that Downer's Almanac is used by the BBC and Eurosport. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 15:36, 16 February 2026 (UTC)

- The Crucible Almanac is one of the best sources, but hard to get hold of. See this WST article which mentions Downer and his book. It has been accepted by editors as a source at featured article reviews including Terry Griffiths (when it was still a BLP article). In 2010, snooker jounrnalist David Hendon wrote that the Almanac was "A major undertaking for Downer, whose efforts should be applauded. The almanac has become indispensible during the championship and is as comprehensive a reference resource as any sporting event could hope for." ("New Almanac ready", Snooker Scene, September 2010 p.30) The list of Crucible centruries at snooker.org mentions that it was "Verified (in 2012) against the excellent Crucible Almanac by Chris Downer." - Thank you for sharing this info. That's what I gathered as well, but as a reviewer I had to ask. The info that you provided will be useful in future if someone challenges the particular source. For me what you provided is sufficient. A.Cython(talk) 16:02, 16 February 2026 (UTC)

Numbers
edit- Fix the total prize fund number at the infobox, 620,000 → 620,800
- Should the inflation adjusted number be included, e.g., in notes? e.g., using Bank of England calculator
- I've added the inflation template for the winner's share and the total. BennyOnTheLoose (talk) 15:25, 16 February 2026 (UTC)
Final comments
editThank you for making the changes and answering my questions. Congratulations for bringing a snooker related article to GA family! A.Cython(talk) 02:35, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
