History

edit

Sherry FitzGerald was established in 1982 following the merger of FitzGerald & Partners and Sherry & Sons.[3]

During its expansion in the 1990s and 2000s, the company developed a franchise model to extend its presence beyond Dublin into regional markets. The Irish Times reported that Sherry FitzGerald planned a network of franchise branches as part of its strategy to build a nationwide footprint.[4]

The expansion of the franchise network contributed to the company's growth into a nationwide property services business with offices throughout Ireland.[4]

During the mid-2000s, Sherry FitzGerald expanded into the London property market through an investment in estate agency Marsh & Parsons, becoming a majority shareholder following a management buyout in 2005.[5]

In 2011, the company sold its majority stake in Marsh & Parsons, marking its exit from the London market.[6]

In May 2022, Sherry FitzGerald was acquired by CastleGate Investments, a private investment firm associated with entrepreneur Tommy Kelly, in a transaction reported to be worth approximately €50 million.[7]

Operations

In 2024, Sherry FitzGerald entered the Northern Ireland market through the acquisition of Belfast-based Simon Brien Residential.[9]

In October 2025, the company expanded into commercial property through the acquisition of Knight Frank Ireland, marking a return to the sector.[10]

Financial performance

The company also paid a €6 million dividend to its parent company, CastleGate Investments.[11]

Market research and commentary

edit

The Irish Times reported in 2026 that the company expected home building levels to be in line with or exceed those recorded in 2025.[12]

The newspaper also reported that the number of new homes started in the first quarter of 2026 had increased significantly compared with the previous year, based on data from the company.[13]

RTÉ News has also cited Sherry FitzGerald research on housing supply, reporting in 2026 that while second-hand housing supply had improved, shortages remained acute in many areas.[14]

Leadership

edit

Marian Finnegan has served as chief executive of Sherry FitzGerald since 2025.[15]

Before becoming chief executive, Finnegan held senior roles within the company and established its research function, contributing to its analysis of the Irish housing market.[15]

Kevin Dufficy serves as chief financial officer and chief operating officer of the company.[16]
