Early life

edit

Danielle Fabiola Navarrette[2] was born in Tucson, Arizona, to an Australian mother and a Mexican father. Since her father was in the U.S. military, her family relocated frequently; by the age of 15, Navarrette had attended eleven different schools.[3] After her parents' separation, Navarrette grew up primarily in Visalia, California.[3] She spent her freshman year at Mt. Whitney High School in Visalia before relocating to Los Angeles and attending Redondo Union High School.[3]

She credits her mother's side of the family for sparking her interest in acting. The family regularly watched the Academy Awards, hosted scary movies at her grandmother's house, and discussed actresses such as Julia Roberts and Audrey Hepburn.[4]

Career

edit

Navarrette's first role came in the Snapchat original sitcom Denton's Death Date (2019), where she starred as Veronica.[5] In 2020, Navarrette was then cast in season four of the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why as Estela de la Cruz.[6] Navarrette's first notable starring role came when she got the part of Sarah Cortez in Superman & Lois (2021).[7][8][9] In June 2023, it was announced that Navarrette and six of her co-stars were departing the show for the fourth and final season due to budget cuts.[10] Navarrette returned to make a few minor appearances in season four.[11] In 2025, Navarrette played Teresa Flores in the action film Trap House.[12]

Also in 2025, it was announced that she would star as Nikki Freeman in the horror film Obsession,[13][14] which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 5, 2025.[15] Navarrette's acting earned her the 2026 Seattle International Film Festival's award for best performance.[16] Navarrette received critical acclaim for her performance.[14][17][18] Louis Peitzman of Vulture called it a stand-out performance for Navarrette, especially as her first major role in the horror genre.[19] Katie Rife of RogerEbert.com said her emotional scenes revealed the humanity behind Nikki's violent behavior and made the character more tragic.[20] Guy Lodge of Variety praised Navarrette for "acing one of the more physically and emotionally taxing horror leads to come down the pike in a while".[21] Bill Bria of SlashFilm compared Nikki's impact to performances in classic horror films such as The Exorcist (1973) and Carrie (1976).[22]

In 2026, it was announced that Navarrette would star in the film Invertigo, with a release date yet to be announced.[23]
