In his retrospective review for AllMusic, William Ruhlmann rated the album 4.5 stars out of five, writing: "The main draws to this two-character musical are the two stars: Mary Martin and Robert Preston. [The show] traces 50 years of a marriage, and [its] relative banality is overcome by the strong performances of the principals."[3]
Back in 1966, Billboard picked the album for its "Spotlight" section. The magazine's reviewer noted: "The cast of two comes across the wax as a full chorus. They beautifully interpret the music and lyrics [...]."[2]
