Hurricane Bob was a Category 3 Atlantic hurricane which made landfall in the New England region of the United States in 1991. The second named storm and first hurricane of the Atlantic hurricane season, it formed near The Bahamas on August 16 and moved northward, brushing the Outer Banks of North Carolina before strengthening. Bob made landfall twice in Rhode Island on August 19, first on Block Island and then near Newport, before weakening over Maine and becoming extratropical in New Brunswick, Canada. The storm caused 18 deaths, left millions without power, and was one of the costliest tropical cyclones in New England history, causing around $1.5 billion in damage. The name Bob was later retired.
