Giuseppe Palamara (born 25 July 1963) is an Italian civil engineer and urban planner.[1] He is known for his technical and urban planning proposals regarding the integration of tourism into the Strait of Messina Bridge project,[2] as well as for his statistical modeling during the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy.[3][4]

Education and career

edit

Palamara graduated in civil engineering from the University of Catania in 1989 and subsequently worked as a freelance construction engineer and urban planner.[5]

Focusing on the infrastructural impact of the Strait of Messina Bridge since 2005, he became the editorial director of the online publication pontesullostrettonews.it in June 2023. The outlet's launch was presented at Palazzo Madama, the seat of the Italian Senate, during an event attended by Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini.[6] Palamara has authored numerous articles on the bridge project for this outlet and for the *Ponte Live* column of MessinaOggi.[7][8]

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Palamara formulated daily statistical modeling and trend analyses tracking infection data in Italy. His technical projections and mathematical "fine-tuned peak" graphics were regularly shared through the public communication channels of former government minister Renato Brunetta.[3]

In 2020, Palamara developed the Gipal Red Bridge, a free-access 3D vector model that allows users to navigate a simulated version of the Strait of Messina Bridge via Google Earth.[9] He also maintains prominent digital and social media forums dedicated to public discussion about the infrastructure.[10]

Belvedere dello Stretto

edit

Palamara is the proponent of the Belvedere dello Stretto concept, which suggests the structural and functional adaptation of the bridge's cross-beams into public observatory decks to promote international tourism.[11] His peer-reviewed study on the structural repurposing of these components was published in March 2025 in Galileo, the engineering journal of the Padua College of Engineers overseen by bridge specialist Enzo Siviero.[2]

The proposal was formally submitted to and reviewed by the municipal Bridge Commission at Messina's City Hall (Palazzo Zanca) on 29 November 2024,[12] as part of broader urban planning discussions regarding the macro-regional impact of the connection.[11][2]

Public speaking and media appearances

edit

Palamara has presented his structural tourism concepts at various academic workshops, institutional panels, and technical conferences across Italy. These include presentations at the Regional University Library of Messina (April 2025), at Palazzo della Seta, Messina (May 2025)[13] the ScanMed corridor infrastructure summit in Roccalumera (April 2025), and macro-regional development forums in Basilicata (March 2026).[14][15][16]

He has also served as a technical commentator on Italian television networks, discussing the engineering and economic variables of the Messina Bridge. His appearances include commentary roles on RAI programs such as Il cavallo e la torre (2023)[17] and Agorà (2025),[18] Mediaset's È sempre Cartabianca (2024),[19] and La7's Propaganda Live (2026).[20]
