English: The name Handeni is believed to have originated from local ethnic communities and particularly from the Zigua people who have inhabited the area for quite many centuries. The settlement existed before colonial administration and later became an important district headquarters under German and British colonial rule, from then to date the name is still preserved and used.
Kiswahili: Jina Handeni linaaminika kuwa limetokana na jamii za wazaliwa wa mahali husika hasa Wazigua ambao wameishi eneo hilo kwa karne nyingi. Makazi ya Handeni yalikuwepo kabla ya ukoloni na baadaye yakawa makao muhimu wakati wa utawala wa Wajerumani na Waingereza. |
