Tenali Hrenak
editTenali Hrenak is an American field recordist and author whose work documents music, spoken word, and environmental soundscapes associated with Rainbow Gatherings. He is the creator of the online audio archive Sounds from the Rainbow, which contains more than two decades of field recordings from gatherings in the United States and abroad.[1]
Hrenak has been featured in independent media. An episode of the End of the Road podcast includes an extended interview with him about his field recording work and the development of the archive.[2]
His publications include the books Gathering Sounds and Gathering Sounds Too, both of which describe the process of field recording at Rainbow Gatherings and provide context for selected recordings. Gathering Sounds received an independent review by author Karin Zirk, who discussed its approach to documenting performances and sound environments.[3] Copies of the books are held in the Rainbow Family of Living Light & Rainbow Gathering Papers at Cornell University Library.[4]
Hrenak’s work as a field recordist is also referenced by Wave Farm, an arts organization that identifies him as an audio engineer and sound collage artist and lists Sounds from the Rainbow as one of his primary projects.[5]
Videos on the Rainbow Family Bookshelf YouTube channel feature discussions of Hrenak’s books and related recordings.[6][7]
