Xavier Toubes (Francisco Javier Toubes Vilariño; born 1947) is a Spanish artist known for his work in ceramics.[1] His practice also includes painting and drawing. He has lived and worked in Spain, England, the Netherlands, and the United States. He is Professor Emeritus at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.[2] His work is held in public and private collections and has been included in exhibitions internationally.[3]
Life and work
editToubes worked in banking in Avilés, Spain, and later in London (1969–1974). While in London, he was a founding member of the Grupo de Traballo Galego (1970).[1]
He studied ceramics at Goldsmiths, University of London (1974–1977), and worked at Winchcombe Pottery in Gloucestershire, United Kingdom (1977–1978). In 1978, he completed a year-long residency at the Cerámicas de Sargadelos factory in Spain.[1]
After earning a Master of Fine Arts from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University (1983), he was a professor of art at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1983–1991).[4]
In 1989, Toubes helped establish the European Ceramic Work Centre (EKWC) in ’s-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands, serving as its artistic director from 1991 to 1999. He joined the faculty of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1999, where he taught until 2018, and is now Professor Emeritus.[1]
Awards and honors
editToubes has received grants from the Ministry of Culture (Spain, 1983), the National Endowment for the Arts (United States, 1986), and the North Carolina Arts Council Artist Fellowship (United States, 1986), as well as an Individual Artist Fellowship from SECCA (1988).[4][1]
He received first prize at the Bienal Internacional de Cerámica de Manises (1993).[1]
He received the Premio da Crítica de Galicia, Artes Plásticas (1995).[5]

editToubes’s work is held in public and private collections, including the European Ceramic Work Centre (EKWC), the Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Kunstmuseum Den Haag, Banco de España Collection, Pinacoteca Municipal de A Coruña, Musée Ariana, and others.[1]
Exhibitions
editToubes’s work has been presented in solo exhibitions at Fundación Luis Seoane (2005), Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea (2007), Elmhurst Art Museum (2008), Instituto Cervantes Chicago (2009), and Chicago Cultural Center (2018).[6][3][7][8]
Group exhibitions include Musée Ariana, Black Mountain College Museum, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Museo del Disseny de Barcelona, and others.[9]
