The Vevčhani Carnival (Macedonian: Вевчански карневал) is an annual festival held on January 13 and 14 in the village of Vevčani, North Macedonia.[1]. It is one of the oldest and most famous folk festivals in the Balkans, with roots dating back at least 1,400 years[2]. The event is a unique synthesis of ancient pagan rituals and modern social satire, held to celebrate the feast of St. Basil the Great and the arrival of the Old New Year according to the Julian calendar.

The carnival is characterized by its "Theater without Walls" atmosphere, where the entire village participates in a two-day procession. It is famous for its three traditional mask types—the Bride and Groom, Stupid August , and the Devils[3]—as well as highly creative, often provocative masks that satirize current global politics. Since 1993, the carnival has been a member of the Federation of European Carnival Cities,[4] serving as a major cultural landmark for the region.t serves a major cultural landmark for the region.

Customs and Celebration

edit

On the evening of 13 January, after nightfall, the vasilichari begin a ritual procession through the village, visiting households one by one. At each home, the masked participants perform traditional dances, sing ritual songs, and deliver humorous, often satirical remarks aimed at the household members. A customary chant wishing prosperity for the coming year is recited. In return, hosts reward the group with bread, raw meat, and money, symbolizing abundance and hospitality[5]

A central ritual of the carnival is the Baptizing of the Water”[6], performed in the early hours of 14 January at the Vevchani Springs. The entire village often participates, with attendance ranging from 1,000 to 1,500 people. Led by the masked procession and the village priest, participants gather at the springs where prayers are read, bread is broken, and water is ritually blessed. This act symbolizes purification, renewal, and protection for the coming year.

The blessed water is collected and taken back to households. There, it is used in two ritual contexts:

  1. The head of the household sprinkles the home, barns, and animal shelters to ensure health, fertility, and prosperity.
  2. The housewife uses the water to prepare kashanik[7][8], a traditional ceremonial bread containing a coin. Finding the coin is believed to bring luck, health, and abundance throughout the year.[9]

Traditional Costumes and Masks

Devil masks at the Vevčani Carnival

The traditional costumes of the Vevčani Carnival are among its most distinctive features and preserve elements dating back to antiquity. While modern satirical masks reflecting current political and social events appear annually, a set of classic ritual characters remains central to the carnival.

The groom and bride.[10] are among the most important symbolic figures. Traditionally portrayed by male participants. Musicians accompany the procession using traditional instruments such as zurlas and drums[11], providing the rhythmic foundation for dances and chants. Devil masks are also worn[11]. The most iconic and visually striking figure is Stupid August (Глупи Август)[12]. Who is a sinister red-clad clownish character, who whips onlookers with a cow tail and swings around pigskins[13]. This character originates from ancient ritual parody, believed to mock authority figures and rulers. The role demands constant movement and intensity. They communicates exclusively through screams, gestures, and aggressive movement,[14] never through spoken language. His role is to protect the groom and bride[9]
