The untitled I Am Legend sequel is an upcoming American post-apocalyptic film, serving as a follow-up to I Am Legend (2007). The film stars Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan, both also produce the film. It is a co-production between Warner Bros. Pictures, Village Roadshow Pictures, Outlier Society, Westbrook Studios, and Weed Road Pictures, and will be released by Warner Bros. Pictures.

editEarlier plans as a prequel
editDirector Francis Lawrence said in 2008 that there would be a prequel to I Am Legend (2007) and that Will Smith would be reprising his role. The plot of the film would reveal what happened to Neville before the infected took over New York. D. B. Weiss was hired to write the script, while Lawrence was in negotiations to return as director, contingent on a sufficiently interesting story. Smith later discussed the premise, which would have his character and a team going from New York City to Washington, D.C., as they made their last stand against those infected with the virus.[1] The film would again explore the premise of being alone. Lawrence stated, "... the tough thing is, how do we do that again and in a different way?"[2] In May 2011, Lawrence stated that the prequel was no longer in development saying, "I don't think that's ever going to happen."[3] In February 2012, Warner Bros. Pictures announced that negotiations had begun to produce another installment with the intention of having Smith reprise his role.[4]
Earlier plans as a reboot
editIn April 2014, Warner Bros. bought Gary Graham's original spec script, A Garden at the End of the World, described as "The Searchers with sci-fi elements", with Roy Lee and Brooklyn Weaver producing under their Vertigo Entertainment and Energy Entertainment banners, respectively, alongside Jonathan Krauss.[5][6] In October that same year, Graham was asked to rework the screenplay to become a reboot of I Am Legend, while Weed Road Pictures' Akiva Goldsman and Overbrook Entertainment's James Lassiter, both of whom produced the 2007 film, were added as producers with Safehouse Pictures' Joby Harold.[7]
Development
editIn March 2022, the film was announced as a sequel instead of a reboot with Smith reprising his role and Goldsman returning as writer from the first film, while Michael B. Jordan will co-star and produce with Elizabeth Raposo under their Outlier Society banner, with Smith, Jon Mone, and Ryan Shimizaki producing under Westbrook Studios, and Goldsman and Greg Lessans produce for Weed Road Pictures.[8] The film will follow the alternate director's cut ending, rather than the theatrical.[9] In July 2024, Steven Caple Jr. was in talks to direct the sequel, who previously directed Creed II (2018), also starring Jordan.[10] In April 2026, Caple Jr. was confirmed to direct.[11] Additionally, Smith teased that Jordan was playing the "head of settlement in Connecticut."[12]
