Tony Ferri is a French philosopher, criminologist and probation officer whose work examines the ethical, social and institutional dimensions of punishment. Active within the French Ministry of Justice since 2001, he is known for his analyses of incarceration, electronic monitoring and contemporary forms of penal surveillance. Ferri has published around twenty books on punishment, criminology and surveillance, several of which have been prefaced by notable intellectual figures such as René Schérer, Michel Onfray, Jean-Marie Delarue and Jean Pradel. His work has been discussed in academic journals and cultural media, and he teaches penal philosophy at the Catholic University of Lille.[1]

Career

Ferri has worked since 2001 as a conseiller pénitentiaire d’insertion et de probation (probation officer) within the French Ministry of Justice, a position that provides the empirical foundation for much of his philosophical and criminological work. His professional experience in the penal system informs his analyses of punishment, incarceration and surveillance, combining field observation with theoretical inquiry.

He is an associate researcher at GERPHAU (Groupe d’étude et de recherche philosophie, architecture, urbain) and at C3RD (Centre de recherche sur les relations entre les risques et le droit). He also teaches penal philosophy at the Catholic University of Lille.[2]
