Theresa Meuse is a Mi'kmaq artist, crafter, educator and writer from L'situk (Bear River First Nation), Nova Scotia. Her work seeks to promote language revitilization, reconciliation, and the flourishing of Mi'kmaq culture.
Theresa currently lives in Elmsdale, Nova Scotia.
Early life and career
Meuse was born to parents Frank and Lois Meuse. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dalhousie University. Her writing engages with traditional Indigenous cultural knowledge to promote language revitalization, Indigenous spiritual practices, and reconciliation.[1]
She has worked as an Indigenous student support worker for several schools in Nova Scotia[2], the Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq, The Atlantic Policy Congress, and the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre.[3] Together with Raymond Swell & AfterWords Literary Festival, Meuse presented a'tukwewinu'k: a night of Mi'kmaw stories for the 2025 Nocturne Arts Festival in Halifax.[4]
On December 8, 2007, she and Holly Meuse and Lorraine Melanson became the first all female band council in their region.[5][6] She has served for two years as Chief of L'situk (Bear River) First Nation.[7]
As of 2025, Meuse works at Mount Saint Vincent University as a Special Advisor on Indigenous Affairs. This role serves as a member of the L'nu Advisory Circle, working in partnership with local Indigenous communities.[7]
She operates an online craft business called “Mi’kma’ki Craft Supplies” which sells craft supplies and offers tutorials related to Mi'kmaw culture.[8]
