The Road is an American reality competition television series created by Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan, David C. Glasser and American musician Blake Shelton who is served as the presenter & executive producer of the series alongside Keith Urban that premiered on CBS on October 19, 2025.

Format

The reality television series follows 12 country singer-songwriters on tour with Keith Urban, where they perform as opening acts in small clubs. The show uses a "docu-follow" format, showing the behind-the-scenes reality of life as a touring musician as contestants compete to win over the audience each night. One musician is eliminated weekly based on audience ratings until one winner earns a record deal, a slot at the Stagecoach Music Festival, and a $250,000 prize

On November 11, 2024, it was announced that CBS had ordered the series from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan and musician Blake Shelton who would presenting the series & would serve as exeuctive producer of the series alongside Taylor Sheridan with MTV Entertainment Studios producing the country music singing competition series whilst 101 Studios, Taylor Sheridan's production company Bosque Ranch Productions and Lucky Horseshoe Productions who is co-producing the series with David Glasser and Lee Metzger also executive producing the series.[2][3] In August 2025 following CBS and MTV Entertainment Studios' parent company Paramount Global merged with David Ellison's production company Skydance Media to form Paramount Skydance in that same month, Production of the country music competition series The Road had been taken over by Paramount Skydance's revived television production studio Paramount Television Studios when the series' producer MTV Entertainment Studios merged with Skydance's television production arm Skydance Television into the relaunched production studio.[4]

On February 25, 2025, it was announced that Keith Urban would be the Headlining Superstar of the series and would serve as co-presenter of the upcoming country music competition series The Road alongside creator Blake Shelton.[5][6] On April 28, 2025, it was announced that Gretchen Wilson would be the Tour Manager of the series and would co-presenting the series joining the series' creator & presenters Blake Shelton and Australian/American singer Keith Urban.[7] On June 25, 2025, the contestants were announced.[1] On July 11, 2025, it was announced that the series will premiere on October 19, 2025.[8][9][10][11][12]

Critical response

The series had been mixed with many viewers had praised its refreshing, raw, and less-produced format when The Road had premiered as it compared to fellow reality television series American Idol or The Voice. Others had criticized the pacing and sound quality.[15]
