Draft: The Kive Company

edit

The Kive Company (DBA Artkive)[1][2] is an American company based in Van Nuys, California[3] that preserves children's artwork as digital images, custom books and framed mosaics.[4][5] Artkive "was created with the missions of using technology to make parents' lives easier."[6] The business is praised for the ease of its concierge service and timely customer service.[7]

History

edit

The company was founded in 2012 by cousins Jedd Gold and Jeff Lipp as a solution to preserve artwork for families.[8] Gold brought with him a background in marketing, previously working for Pepsi and Variety Magazine.[9] Lipp previously worked in eCommerce and corporate finance. He also brought a wealth of business experience as the co-founder and CEO of Chockstone, Inc. and Pure Payments, Inc.[10] The Kive Company raised $500,000 in seed funding “from Los Angeles-based startup accelerator Amplify, which The Kive Company has joined, and from various angel investors.”[11][12]

The company's first product was the Artkive App, a mobile application to preserve children's art. Users were able to upload and organize personal art images, with an option to order a custom book through the app.[13][14]

In 2018, The Kive Company launched the Artkive Box, a concierge service that sends parents a box for their children's artwork. Parents return the art with a prepaid shipping label. Each piece of art is then professionally photographed, edited, and then formatted into a custom art book.[15] At first, profitability was minimal. As a last ditch effort Gold and Lipp decided to “hire an agency, make a viral video and give it 90 days.”[16] The video went on to receive over 10 million views.[15] Soon after, Artkive Box sales per day would equal their rate of sales per month. To meet demand, the company scaled and would hire 100 new employees within the next 12 months.[17]

In 2019, The company expanded into a 10,500 square foot warehouse space designed by AAmp Studio in order to accommodate the business’ growing needs.[18]

In 2023, Artkive launched Cardkive, a similar concierge service to Artkive, offering a smaller box and shipping label to preserve greeting and wedding cards into a keepsake book.[19]

In 2024, The Kive Company acquired Mombox[20], a business that sells “a curated kit of postnatal care products focused squarely on the mom rather than the child.”[21]
