Draft:The Chipped Cup

  • Comment: Apart from being a local coffee shop, there's apparently only one newsworthy event, which isn't enough to merit an encyclopaedia article. —ClaudineChionh (she/her · talk · email) 01:13, 3 July 2026 (UTC)

The Chipped Cup is a coffee shop in the Hamilton Heights neighborhood of Harlem in Manhattan, New York City. Opened in 2012 at 3610 Broadway, it is known for its Victorian-inspired décor and rear garden.[1][2]

History

edit

The Chipped Cup was founded in 2012 by Andrew Ding, a classical violist, and Karen Cantor, an art historian, who had previously worked together as real estate agents and learned of the basement space through that work.[1] The owners renovated the space, on Broadway between 148th and 149th Streets, and added a rear garden.[1] Cantor drew on items from her grandmother's attic for the café's décor, and the business took its name from the idea of "perfect imperfection".[1] The shop serves Counter Culture Coffee.[1]

The café hosts community events, including monthly open-mic nights, performances by local musicians, and film screenings.[1]

Marriage equality sign

edit

In March 2013, amid national debate over same-sex marriage, the Chipped Cup displayed a red equals sign in support of marriage equality on a chalkboard outside the shop and posted a photograph of it on social media.[3][4] After a customer publicly criticized the sign, the episode drew local and national attention and prompted an outpouring of support for the shop, including an anonymous donation that the owners used to give away free coffee.[3][5] The incident was reported by The Village Voice, DNAinfo, and PIX11.[3][4][5]

Reception

edit

In 2015, People ranked the Chipped Cup first in a feature titled "The Best Coffee Shops in America".[2] The café has also been featured by Time Out New York.[6]
