Comment: Most of the sources are either routine coverage, they are not independent of the subject, or they do not significantly cover the board itself, rather discuss issues the board voted on. 🌀Hurricane Wind and Fire, why did you decline my draft? (talk) (contribs)🔥 04:05, 27 April 2026 (UTC)

The Tennessee State Board of Education (TSBE) is a state-level school board designed to govern and create policy for the Tennessee Department of Education and advises the Governor of Tennessee on plans for educational improvement in the state. The TSBE is appointed by the Governor and then accepted by the Tennessee General Assembly for each of its members. The Department of Education is responsible for executively implementing and upholding TSBE's policies.[1]
In addition to general policy, TSBE institutes the state's standards for PreK-12 curriculums, such as graduation credits and course requirements.[2] The board is also responsible for school and educational accountability for the state,[3] using its power to close or reform programs and schools that don't meet state standards.[4][5] Tennessee teaching licensure and standards are determined by the TSBE, including license terms and the licensing process.[6]

Organization
editThere are 9 appointed members of the board, corresponding to each of the congressional districts of Tennessee. The executive director for the Tennessee Higher Education Commission serves on the board as an ex-officio, nonvoting member of the board. An appointed high school student is also a part of the board as an ex-officio member, and serves for student representation for the state of Tennessee. The 9 voting members of the board serve 5 year terms on the beginning of their term with the TSBE, and the student member serves only for a year term.[1]
