Tami Alpert is an American documentary filmmaker and international reporter.
Tami's filmography includes Netflix's Cuba and the Cameraman[1] which received a National Emmy Award nomination and covers over 40 years of Cuban history. Tami is known for her wartime reports[2] from Kandahar, Afghanistan in the aftermath of September 11th[3] which featured Masuda Sultan, making Tami the first female camerawoman to produce a documentary in Afghanistan following 9/11.[4] Tami was a producer for HBO's Life of Crime: 1984-2020[5] which won a National Emmy Award for outstanding Crime and Justice Documentary,[6] won the Award at the Venice Film Festival, and was nominated for a Peabody Award.[7] She was an assistant producer for HBO's Alive Day Memories,[8] which was nominated for a National Emmy Award.[9] Her projects have aired on networks including CBS, PBS, HBO and Netflix.[10] Most recently, in 2026 she was a producer of HBO's Armed Only with a Camera - the Life and Death of Brent Renaud (2026)[11] which was nominated for an Academy Award[12] and was the SXSW - Audience Award Winner.
Born and raised in New York, Tami comes from a family of filmmakers. Her father, Jon Alpert, and mother, Keiko Tsuno, founded Downtown Community Television Center (DCTV). In 2022 DCTV opened the Firehouse Cinema, one of the few documentary-centric cinemas in the world.[13] Tami currently sits on the Board of Directors of DCTV. Tami attended Stuyvesant High School, graduated from Yale University and received her JD from Harvard Law School.[14]
