Surf Club Inc. (also known as Surf Club or The Surf Club) is an American independent record label, publishing company, and entertainment company based in Los Angeles, California. Founded in 2007 by three-time Grammy Award-winning producer Chauncey "Hit-Boy" Hollis Jr. alongside fellow producers Chase N. Cashe, B. Carr, and Chili Chil, Surf Club originated as a producer collective before evolving into a full-service independent label encompassing recorded music, publishing administration, sync licensing, and artist management.[1][2] In 2025, the label became the vehicle for Hit-Boy's transition to full independence after exiting an 18-year publishing contract with Universal Music Publishing Group.[3]

History

edit

Formation and early years

edit

Surf Club was formed in 2007 in Los Angeles as a producer collective by Hit-Boy, Chase N. Cashe, B. Carr (Brandon Carr), and Chili Chil, with additional members including songwriter Stacy Barthe, Kent M$NEY, and Young Ry.[1] The collective gained early recognition when Drake referenced Chase N. Cashe and Surf Club on his 2010 release "9AM in Dallas Freestyle."[1] Members of the collective contributed production and songwriting to projects by Jay-Z, Kanye West, Beyoncé, Nas, Travis Scott, Rihanna, Britney Spears, and Wiz Khalifa, among others.[1] Hit-Boy's production work during this period included Jay-Z and Kanye West's "Niggas in Paris", which received RIAA diamond certification, and Travis Scott's "Sicko Mode", which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100.[3]

EMPIRE Publishing partnership

edit

In January 2023, Surf Club announced a joint venture with EMPIRE Publishing, the publishing arm of independent distributor EMPIRE, a deal covered by Billboard and music industry trade publication Hits Daily Double.[2][4][5][6] The partnership expanded Surf Club's publishing administration infrastructure and introduced three new signees: Gary "G Dav" Davis, a Grammy-winning contributor to Nas's King's Disease; Jesse "Dr. Blum" Blum, a multi-instrumentalist known for work with Twenty One Pilots and Rage Against the Machine; and Randy "Bandz" Holmes, a writer and producer with credits for YG and Kamaiyah.[2]

Independence and Hit-Boy Music Group

edit

In July 2025, Hit-Boy publicly announced his release from an 18-year publishing deal with Universal Music Publishing Group, which he had signed at age 19 and which lacked a defined end date. He credited Jay-Z and Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez with negotiating his exit.[3] Hit-Boy released "What's the Deal?", his first single as a fully independent artist, via Surf Club Inc., establishing the label as the primary vehicle for his independent career.[3] The label subsequently launched Hit-Boy Music Group as its distribution arm, distributed through EMPIRE, providing full creative and financial control over its releases.[7]

In 2024, Surf Club co-released Rent Due, a collaborative EP between Hit-Boy and LaRussell, alongside an associated Rent Relief program providing grants to independent artists and creatives. The initiative awarded $1,000 grants to 15 artists, entrepreneurs, and creatives, and was covered by Forbes.[8]

In October 2025, Surf Club released GOLDFISH, a collaborative album by Hit-Boy and The Alchemist, accompanied by a short film starring Danny Trejo, Rory Culkin, Blake Anderson, and Simon Rex.[9]
