Small Island Big Song is a musical & film project founded in 2015.[1] by Australian producer and filmmaker Tim Cole and Taiwanese artist BaoBao Chen[2]. The project documents and combines traditional music from indigenous communities across Pacific and Indian Ocean island nations. It focuses on topics of cultural recognition, climate change and ocean conservation. The project has included musicians from 16 island nations. [3]

Overview

edit

The project features musicians from multiple island nations, including Madagascar, Mauritius, Taiwan, and Papua New Guinea[4]. Recordings are made on location in the artists' home environments rather than in conventional studio settings. The recorded material is subsequently edited together to create collaborative compositions[5].

The project addresses themes related to indigenous cultures, environmental issues, and climate change. Small Island Big Song has partnered with organizations working on ocean conservation and climate education initiatives.

History

edit

The project began in 2015 when Cole and Chen traveled across island nations including Madagascar, Mauritius, Taiwan, Papua New Guinea, and others, recording traditional musicians in their local environments. Recordings were made on location and then combined together into collaborative songs, creating what Cole described as a "musical tapestry" connecting island cultures.[6]

The project's self-titled debut album was released in 2018 and premiered at South by Southwest (SXSW) that year. This was followed by international performances featuring various contributing musicians from the project. [7].

A second album, Our Island, was released in 2022.[8][9]

Reception

edit

The debut album received the 2019 German Record Critics' Award for Album of the Year and the Songlines Music Awards 2019 for Best Asia/Pacific album [10]. The project also received recognition at the 2019 Independent Music Awards 2019[11] in the United States, and a nomination at the Golden Melody Awards Taiwan 2022[12].

Small Island Big Song has performed at international festivals including WOMADelaide[13], Colours of Ostrava[14], and Wharton Center [15]. The project's films have been screened at film festivals such as the Ubud Indigenous Film Festival.

In 2024, Cole, Chen and some of the Small Island Big Song musicians held a Mason Artist-in-Residence at George Mason University, USA. As part of their role, they run a series of education and engagement programs[16]
