Signal Hill Canadian Whisky is a Canadian whisky brand produced by Signal Hill Spirits Inc. The whisky is distilled at the Hiram Walker distillery in Windsor, Ontario, and blended and bottled by Rock Spirits in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.[1][2] The brand is partially owned by Canadian actor Dan Aykroyd, who is also co-founder of Crystal Head Vodka.[3][4]
History
editSignal Hill Spirits Inc. was founded in 2014 by Canadian spirits industry veterans Jonathan Hemi, Brian Meret, and Kristina Cappellini.[5] The founders engaged Michael Booth, a retired master blender formerly of Hiram Walker, to develop the whisky's blend. Booth spent approximately two years creating over 40 different blends before finalizing the product.[6][5] According to NUVO Magazine, Aykroyd expanded his spirits portfolio with the Signal Hill brand in 2017.[3] The whisky began appearing in Canadian provincial liquor stores including the LCBO and was later introduced to international markets including the United States and the United Kingdom.[7]
Production
editSignal Hill is made from approximately 90% Ontario corn and malted barley.[8] The corn component is double-distilled through a column still, while the barley is pot-distilled.[9] The spirit is aged in three types of cask: new white oak, first-fill bourbon barrels, and reused Canadian whisky casks.[2][9] The whisky is non-chill filtered, which the producers state is intended to preserve a fuller mouthfeel.[8] It is blended with water from Newfoundland and bottled in St. John's.[2]
In addition to the flagship 40% ABV expression, Signal Hill released a limited-production variant called Founders Select Overproof at 56.3% ABV.[3]
Name and branding
editThe brand takes its name from Signal Hill, the National Historic Site in St. John's, Newfoundland.[3] The hill is known as the location where Guglielmo Marconi confirmed receipt of the first transatlantic wireless signal in 1901.[2] The brand's logo features three interlocked triangles, a Valknut symbol from Norse mythology, chosen as a reference to the Norse explorers who landed in present-day Newfoundland approximately 1,000 years ago.[2][10]
Reception
editThe Park Whiskey Society noted that Signal Hill stands out in the Canadian whisky market for its relative transparency about ingredients and production methods, including the non-chill filtration disclosure on its label.[8] The Rum Howler Blog gave it a score of 79 out of 100, describing it as flavourful but noting some roughness.[9] NUVO Magazine described the flagship expression as having distinct brown sugar and cinnamon sweetness.[3] Elle Gourmet included Signal Hill in a feature on celebrity-backed spirits brands that demonstrate genuine involvement from their celebrity partners.[4]
Awards
editSignal Hill has received recognition at several spirits competitions:
- Platinum Medal for Best Canadian Blended Whisky at the 2019 SIP Awards[5]
- Gold Medal for Package Design at the 2019 SIP Awards[5]
- Gold Medal for Best in Class at the 2019 Alberta Beverage Awards[7]
- Gold Medal at the 2023 Global World Whisky Masters from The Spirits Business[7]
- Platinum Medal at the 2024 SIP Awards (Founders Select Overproof)[7]
